Rockets vs. Blazers Saturday September 24, 2016 Game Time – 7:05 pm Tonight’s Preview: This is the second of 10 meetings between the Rockets and Blazers this season. These two teams opened the season last night in Kamloops with the Blazers earning a 9-2 win. Jake Kryski and Kole Lind each scored once and added an assist in the setback. If you want to throw preseason games into the mix, these two BC rivals will have played each other 13 times before the regular season ends. Did I mention they last faced one another in an epic seven game opening round playoff series in the 2016 post season? The Rockets won that affair 4 games to 3 with four of the games being decided by a single goal. Last season, the Rockets were 5-2-1-0 in eight regular season meetings against Kamloops, but 7 of those 8 games were again decided by one goal. The Rockets are 29-11-4-0 in the last five seasons against Kamloops including winning 16 of their last 20 regular season games at Prospera Place. Last season the Rockets opened the regular season against Kamloops, winning opening night (4-3) before earning a victory (7-3) a night later in Kamloops. The Rockets play 6 of their first 8 games on the st road including two games in Prince George next weekend (September 30/October 1 ). What the heck happened? Last season, the Rockets won 48 games and finished this season with 100 points. Only Victoria (106) and Brandon (102) had more points than the Rockets last season. The Rockets th th scored the 4 most goals in the WHL (269) while allowing the 6 fewest (218). The team advanced all the way to the Western Conference final for a third consecutive season after playoff series wins over Kamloops (7 games) and Victoria (7 games). The team was eliminated by the Seattle Thunderbirds (four straight games) in the Western Conference final. In each of the last two seasons, the Rockets season has st ended in overtime. Tyson Baillie led the team in scoring last season with 95 points and was named a 1 team Western Conference all-star. Smith Guides Team: The Kelowna Rockets made a head coaching change at seasons end. After just one th th year on the job, Brad Ralph parted ways with the team on May 9 . Then on July 6 , Jason Smith was hired as Brad Ralph’s replacement. Smith is the Rockets fourth coach in the last four years. Smith, who retired September 2, 2009, played 16 seasons in the NHL before joining the coaching staff of the NHL’s Ottawa Senators, a role Smith has held for the last four seasons’. Smith won a gold medal for Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships in 1993 and was named the WHL Defenceman of the Year that same season. Winds of Change: The Kelowna Rockets have lost three of their top four scorers from last season. Tyson Baillie (95 pts.), Justin Kirkland (67 pts.) and Cole Linaker (50 pts.) are no longer with the team. There is an outside chance Kirkland could return if he fails to stick with Nashville’s AHL affiliate. Goaltender th Jackson Whistle also graduated. Joe Gatenby was traded to Kamloops for Jake Kryski on August 18 . The Rockets return 19 players from last season’s team. The only other change saw Adam Brown join the team as a part time coach. Brown owns the Kelowna Rockets franchise record for games played (200) and saves made (5,079). Broadcasters Bits: The Rockets were 3 and 2 in five pre-season games. Jake Kryski and Kole Lind led the team in pre-season points with 8 each….Nine members of the Rockets participated in NHL training camps. Tomas Soustal and Gordie Ballhorn earned tryouts with Edmonton and Dallas respectively. Nick Merkley (Arizona), Lucas Johansen (Washington), Dillon Dube (Calgary), Devante Stephens (Buffalo), Calvin Thurkauf (Columbus), Braydyn Chizen (Minnesota) and Justin Kirkland (Nashville) are all drafted players…The Rockets received an honourable mention in this week’s CHL Top 10 pre-season rankings. The roster breakdown by region includes 15 players from B.C., three from Alberta, seven from Saskatchewan, one from Manitoba, one from the Czech Republic and one from Latvia. There are 20 WHL veterans on the roster and eight WHL rookies. BY THE NUMBERS: Collin Shirley has played a team high 275 WHL games over his career... Collin Shirley played his 250th career WHL game on January 29th vs. Vancouver… Jermaine Loewen played in his 100th career WHL game March 9th vs. Spokane… Connor Ingram is the 11th goaltender in franchise history to play 100 games with the Blazers… Scott Mahovlich played his first career WHL game on September 23rd vs. Kelowna KAMLOOPS BLAZERS ‘Who to Watch’: The Kamloops Blazers return 10 forwards from last year’s roster. Team captain Collin Shirley leads the Blazers up front this season. Shirley led the Blazers in scoring with 37 goals and 79 points last season. Fellow 20-year-old Matt Revel is another leader among the forward group. Shirley and Revel are both in their fifth and final WHL seasons. Deven Sideroff is a player to watch. The 19-year-old signed with the Anaheim Ducks and will not be available to the Blazers this weekend as he is still at the Ducks training camp. Nick Chyzowski enters his 19-year-old season and fourth year with the hockey club. Matt Campese and Spencer Bast are both 19 and looking to be full-time contributors to the roster. Rudolfs Balcers is an import from Latvia that should be an exciting player to watch this season. The Blazers have three 18-year-olds forwards who will have a prominent role on the roster. Garrett Pilon was the Blazers rookie of the year last year with 42 points. Quinn Benjafield and Jermaine Loewen are in their third seasons and will need to contribute every night. Erik Miller returns for his second season as a 17-year-old. Travis Walton and Scott Mahovlich are a pair of new 17year-olds on the scene. Jackson Shepard and Brodi Stuart are both 16-year-olds trying to crack the roster. On defense, the Blazers have eight WHL veterans. Dallas Valentine is a 20-year-old and the leader on the backend. Joe Gatenby, acquired from Kelowna, will be a key piece for the Blazers. Cam Reagan established himself as an 18-year-old last season, Ondrej Vala and Dawson Davidson both played prominent roles on last year’s team. They are a year older and a year stronger. Dan Gatenby is a new defenseman to the roster acquired from the Rockets. Nolan Kneen and Conner McDonald are back for their 17-year-old seasons. Tylor Ludwar and 16-year-old Luke Zazula are the others on defense. In goal, Connor Ingram is back for his third season. Dylan Ferguson is a year older and newcomer Carter Phair is fighting for a spot on the roster. KELOWNA ROCKETS ‘Who to Watch’: The Rockets are coming off a season in which they finished third overall in the WHL standings with a 48-20-4-0 record. The Rockets return 17 players from last year’s roster and have 18 WHL veterans on their team. Up front, Nick Merkley and Dillon Dube are their most dynamic players. Both could be missing this weekend due to NHL camps. Tomas Soustal and Calvin Thurkauf are a pair of big-bodied import players that play in a top six role with the hockey club. Jake Kryski, an 18-year-old forward acquired from the Blazers, should be a player to watch. Rodney Southam, Tanner Wishnowski, Riley Stadel and Tate Coughlin should add some grit to their lineup. Kole Lind and Jordan Borstmayer are both second year players that should contribute on a regular basis. Jack Cowell, Conner Bruggen-Cate, and Kyle Topping are all 17-year-olds that are entering their first season with the Rockets. Nolan Foote is the lone 16-year-old forward. On the backend, the Rockets are led by NHL first round pick Lucas Johansen. He tallied 49 points last season. Devante Stephens and Gordie Ballhorn are both reliable two-way defenders. Cal Foote is a terrific player that is projected to be a first round NHL pick this season. Braydyn Chizen and Johnathan Smart are both second year players that should play regularly. In goal, the Rockets have 20-year-old Michael Herringer as their starter. Brodan Salmond is in his second season as Herringer’s back-up.
