Rockets vs. Chiefs Wednesday October 10, 2012 Game Time - 7:05 pm Tonight’s Preview: The Kelowna Rockets play their third home game of the regular season tonight by welcoming the Spokane Chiefs. Five of the team’s first seven games have been on the road this season. These two teams are meeting for the first of four times in 2012-2013. The seasonal series continues th January 16 at Prospera Place before concluding with two games at Spokane’s Memorial Arena January th th 18 and February 6 . These two teams met four times last season with the Rockets winning twice and losing twice. Overall, the Chiefs out-scored the Rockets 13-10. Following tonight’s game, the Rockets are back on the road for back-to-back games in Victoria before hosting Prince George in a rare Thursday th (October 18 ) night game at Prospera Place. Overall, the Rockets have won three of their last four games and are coming off a 7-5 win in Prince George Saturday night. th
This and That: Myles Bell and Colton Sissons are top ten in WHL scoring. Bell (5 ) has 5+6=11 while th) Sissons (8 has 3+8=11 in seven games. Coincidentally, the two are line mates…Bell has 9 points in his last four games….Sissons is riding a four game point streak with 3+7=10 over that period…Bell is tied with Brandon’s Ryan Pulock for the WHL lead in scoring by defenceman. Both have 11 points on the season….Colton Sissons has eight assists this season, which is over half the 15 assists he recorded last season…Goaltender Jordon Cooke has played the second most minutes of any goaltender in the WHL this season. The 19 year-old has started all seven games and has racked up 382 minutes in goal. Dylen McKinlay has 119 points while Zach Franko hit the 100 point plateau last weekend and now has 101 career points. New Faces Emerge: The Kelowna Rockets were one of the most active teams obtaining players before the puck dropped on the 2012-2013 season. The Rockets acquired two 20 year-old players in separate deals last Thursday. J.T Barnett was acquired from the Everett Silvertips off waivers while Dylen McKinlay th was picked up from the Kootenay Ice for a 5 round bantam pick. Goaltender Jackson Whistle was acquired from Vancouver for a third round bantam pick. Ryan Olsen was picked up in the Shane McColgan/Jessey Astles deal. TONIGHT’S GAME The Chiefs and Rockets will face off in their first of four meetings on the season. Spokane and Kelowna won’t play each other th th again until a home-and-home series on Wednesday, January 16 in Kelowna and Friday the 18 in Spokane. Spokane won the season series last year with a 2-1-0-1 record, including a 1-1 record on the road. On average the Chiefs outshot Kelowna 37.8th 21.5. On October 8 Spokane outshot Kelowna 45-12 in a 5-1 win. Spokane outscored Kelowna 13-10 in the series, including 61 in the first. Mitch Holmberg had seven goals and nine points in four games and Brenden Kichton scored two goals and seven points. Mike Aviani scored four goals. NEXT GAME TH FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12 at KAMLOOPS BLAZERS AIR-6:30 GAME-7:00 RADIO-1510 KGA Spokane will travel to Kamloops for their first of four meetings with the defending B.C. Division champions. The Chiefs will host th Kamloops on November 9 in their next match-up. Spokane finished last season 1-3-0-0 versus Kamloops with their lone win th coming in their last meeting of the season, a 6-4 decision on March 14 , 2012 in Spokane. Brenden Kichton, Dylan Walchuk and Reid Gow all had goals. Three of the four games were tied after the second period. On average, the Blazers outscored the Chiefs 4.00-3.00 and outshot Spokane 27.25.3. Spokane finished 3-13 (23.1%) on the power play and 18-20 (90.0%) on the penalty kill. Mitch Holmberg had five assists in three games while Kichton had 2-1-3 in four games. Eric Williams’ lone appearance was a win where he stopped 23 shots. LAST GAME TH SATURDAY, OCTOBER 6 SPOKANE-4 vs. LETHBRIDGE-2 The Chiefs raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first period and held on late as they doubled up the Lethbridge Hurricanes 4-2 in front of 5,342 fans at the Spokane Arena last Saturday. The Chiefs got on the board in the first with an unassisted goal from Mitch Holmberg at 11:47. Todd Fiddler added to the Chiefs lead with a power play score at the 14:07 mark on assists from Jason Fram and Tanner Mort. Spokane’s advantage swelled to three goals when Collin Valcourt scored at 16:33 with assists from Reid Gow and Brenden Kichton. Lethbridge got their first goal just nine-seconds later on a shot from winger Jaimen Yakubowski to cap the first period scoring with Spokane leading 3-1. Despite recording 14 more shots than the Hurricanes in the second period (19-5), the Chiefs failed to capitalize with a goal. Lethbridge cut the Spokane lead to 3-2 with a shorthanded goal from Remi Laurencelle at 8:25. Tanner Mort put the game out of reach with a goal at 15:38 on assists from Fiddler and Mike Aviani. Spokane’s Eric Williams finished the night 25 of 27 on save opportunities while Ty Rimmer was 35 of 39 for Lethbridge. The Chiefs were 2-4 on the power play and 3-3 on the penalty kill. NEWS AND NOTES HOLM-SCHOOL…Mitch Holmberg has points in all five games this season including a league leading seven goals. His 10 th points are 10 in the WHL. The previous two seasons he combined for 42 goals. His career high 27 last season were second on the Chiefs. He added 28 assists for 55 points. Holmberg led all Chiefs with 11 goals in the playoffs, including two overtime winners (versus Vancouver in game four of the first round and game one of the second round versus Tri-City). Holmberg was the Chiefs first round selection in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft, AVIANI FLEW…Nineteen-year-old Mike Aviani has points in all five games with four goals and two assists. He is also a team leading +5. Aviani had a career high 13 goals and 45 points in 70 games last season. He added 80 penalty minutes and was a +28. th
GAL GAB…Blake Gal is in his fifth season in a Chiefs’ uniform and has played 272 career games. Gal is currently 14 all-time in franchise history in games played. GOW SCHOLASTIC PLAYER OF THE YEAR...Three-year veteran Reid Gow has points in four of five games this season with five assists, four on the power play. Gow was selected as the winner of the WHL's Daryl K. (Doc) Seaman Trophy for the Scholastic Player of the Year last season. Gow earned a cumulative 95% in his core classes. The defenseman from Killarney, Manitoba scored 22 points, including 20 assists, in 54 games last year. Gow recorded a career high four points, all assists, in a st 7-2 win over Tri-City on October 1 , 2011. VALCOURT PRESS…Collin Valcourt had two goals and two assists in his last four games. Last year in his second full season he recorded 16 goals and 30 points. He has appeared in 127 career WHL games with 26 career goals, 59 points and 202 penalty minutes. As a rookie, Valcourt scored eight goals and 25 points in 53 games in 2010-11. He also added 95 penalty minutes, which were third on Spokane’s roster. th
WALLY’S WORLD…Dylan Walchuk had his second career three point game with three helpers on September 29 in a 5-3 win th over the Tri-City Americans. After being added to the Chiefs’ roster on January 10 , 2012, Dylan Walchuk scored 10 goals and 24 points in 34 games. In 2010-11 Walchuk led the Vernon Vipers of the British Columbia Hockey League in points with 56, including 24 goals and 32 assists. He added another 13 goals and 20 points in 24 playoff games as Vernon finished as a runnerup in the Royal Bank Cup Championship, the Canadian Junior A National Title, one year after winning it. Walchuk joined the Chiefs after splitting time in 2011-12 at Northern Michigan University and Vernon. STEW’S VIEW... Liam Stewart was named the Spokane Chiefs Rookie of the Year in 2011-12 after scoring 14 goals and 26 points in 66 games. He was also a +8. Stewart scored the game winning goal in OT of game six of the Western Conference th Semi-Finals versus Tri-City forcing a game seven. Stewart scored two shorthanded goals on February 29 , 2012 in a 6-1 win over the Victoria Royals. Stewart led all WHL rookies with four shorthanded goals in 2011-12. IN THE CREASE…The Chiefs currently are carrying two goaltenders, 19-year-old Eric Williams and 17-year-old rookie Garret Hughson. Williams was acquired in a trade in December, 2011 with the Prince Albert Raiders. As a Chief, Williams went 8-6-3-0 in 18 regular season appearances. Williams finished the post-season with the league’s third best goals against average at 2.22. He won his first five playoff starts and had a .927 post season save percentage. In 86 career regular season appearances, Williams has 33 career wins. Hughson appeared in 19 games last season with Medicine Hat of the AMHL. th
MORT REPORT…Tanner Mort recorded his second career multiple point game with a goal and assist on October 6 , 2012 in a 4-2 win over Lethbridge. Mort has appeared in 133 career games as a Chief, including a career high 63 in the 2010-11 season where he had three goals and 16 points as a 17-year-old. FRAM COMES ALIVE...Jason Fram has points, one goal and three assists, in his last four games. As a 16-year-old rookie last season Fram had four goals, seven points and was a +7 in 51 games. NACHBAUR TO JOIN TEAM CANADA…Spokane Chief Head Coach Don Nachbaur will be an Assistant Coach on Canada's National Junior Team for the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey U20 World Championship in Ufa, Russia. Steve Spott, head coach and general manager of the OHL’s Kitchener Rangers, will be the head coach. Former captain and assistant coach Kevin Sawyer will join the organization in an interim basis as a Coaching Assistant while Nachbaur attends to his duties with Hockey Canada. Jon Klemm, who is entering his fourth season as the Chiefs’ assistant coach, will be the head coach while Nachbaur is away, beginning December 8th. Nachbaur will not return until early January, missing a potential of up to 11 games. th
