Pictured with President Jim is our guest last week, Dale Heyink. Dale has owned and operated Puritas Road Nursery for the past 34 years and still operates one of two greenhouses on the West Side of Cleveland. He is a member of West Park Kiwanis and West Shore Rotary. Having a degree in Psychology and a Masters Degree in Guidance Counseling did not stop Dale from getting into the nursery business - his father and uncle were also in the business. Dale’s talk centered on his knowledge of Puritas Springs Amusement Park which closed in 1957 following a fire in 1956 which destroyed the “Cyclone” roller coaster ride. Many remembered that. Winter time, usually being a slow time business wise, Dale brings in many visitors, for the past 15 years, with his display of nine operating HO Gauge railroad trains coursing their way through the nursery. He brought along five varieties of flowers, planted them in a large container and donated it to the club which was auctioned off for $35.00. For those of us who have fed the herds of white tail deer with our flowers and vegetables Dale suggests dusting our plants with an organic product made from chicken feathers of all things and is called “Feather Meal”. The deer will not take notice of your plantings. The product comes in 60, 10 and 5lb bags at very reasonable prices. Dale is the only supplier in the area. The nursery is located at 19201 Puritas Rd. just East of the top of Puritas Road Hill.
