[email protected] LAY SPEAKER/SERVANT CLASS DESCRIPTIONS Basic A — Led by Connie Wood, North Central Lay Servant Ministries Director Basic B —Led by Ken Adams, Conference Director of Lay Servant Ministries Basic Courses This course is the foundation for all the other Learning and Leading Courses. In this course, you are encouraged to discover and employ personal spiritual gifts as God intended. Participants are invited to consider the importance of exercising service, leadership, developing future leaders, remaining rooted in consistent spiritual practices and being part of a group that holds members accountable in their discipleship. It offers guidelines for best practices as a church leader and in mission and ministry in the community and daily life.
ADVANCED COURSES (Must complete Basic A and B to attend Advanced Courses ) Teaching Adults with Confidence Dr. Joyce Thornton will be leading this class. If you currently teach adults in your congregation or would like to prepare to teach adults, then you will find this course helpful. This is a hands-on, learning opportunity that will give you tools and techniques you can use to teach with confidence as you engage your students in the process of becoming disciples who look and live like Jesus. The tools and techniques can be used to create lessons from scratch or to adapt lessons provided in a printed curriculum. Bring your Bible, small package of colored pencils, and paper. Worship Rev. Dr. Constance Cherry is Professor of Worship and Director of the Christian Worship Major at Indiana Wesleyan University. She is an elder in the West Ohio Conference, United Methodist Church. Dr. Cherry is frequently invited to serve as visiting professor at institutions of higher learning in various international settings and speaks at many conferences. Her book, the Worship Architect: A Blueprint for Designing Culturally Relevant and Biblically Faithful Services, is approaching its fourth printing. Dr. Cherry will help students to understand what is involved in constructing meaningful worship. Prayer This class is led by Paula Shrock who serves the North Central District as prayer coordinator. Men’s Ministry John Dockery has led the North Central District for a number of years in the area of Men’s Ministry. John is a Scouting and Youth Services Coordinator for the Indiana Conference. John is a certified Lay Servant and serves as a supply pastor at Joyce Chapel United Methodist Church in Alexandria. Preaching 1 Leader to be determined.
