Leamington FC Match Report - Brakes 3 v 0 Nuneaton Town Photo by John Gwynne
Next Home match - Brakes
Pre season friendly New Windmill Ground, Harbury Lane Saturday August 7th 2010 Brakes signed off from their pre season warm up with an impressive performance over their neighbours from the north of the county at the New Windmill Ground. Nuneaton deservedly won a second successive promotion last season, winning the Play Off Final against Chippenham Town, and have had a solid pre season themselves, but they had no answer to a determined Brakes team who stood up to everything, did not shirk a single challenge, and at times played some cracking football. It was clear from the early stages of this game that Brakes were up for the challenge, and Luke Corbett went close when a half cleared

corner was hooked back into the area by Lee Downes, the Boro’ keeper Danny Alcock was off his line to claim the ball. Alex Cowley’s free kick from distance was carried by the wind towards goal, but Alcock was alert to any potential danger, and showed a safe pair of hands again. The visitors had the ball in the net on 18 minutes but the celebrations were quickly cut short as they were penalised for a foul in the build up. Matt Lewis had a chance to score against his former club at the opposite end when Alcock cut out a ball forward for Corbett, only to play it straight to his strike partner, but Lewis curled his shot well over the bar. The first signs of the game turning nasty began to

Tuesday 24th August 7:45pm Kickoff show after Kyle Storer and Luke Corbett clashed in midfield. The two players began pushing each other, and were perhaps lucky not to be ordered from the field by the Referee. Corbett was clearly fired up after the clash, tearing after every ball, and he channelled his anger to good effect on 29 minutes, when a throw in from the left was allowed to travel across the area by the Nuneaton defence, and the Brakes striker turned neatly inside his marker before firing inside the far post with the aid of a deflection. Storer was eventually booked by the Referee for one bad challenge too many, which under the circumstances was perhaps a little unnecessary, but there was worse to come in the way of cards later in the game. The visitors appeared frustrated with their performance, and James Armson quickly followed Storer into the book, presumably for dissent.
a bright future ahead.

Luke Corbett fashioned another chance for himself with a superb turn inside the penalty area, but was thwarted by a fine save from Danny Alcock. Brakes thought they had doubled their advantage minutes into the second half, when following a strong run by Lee Downes, Matt Lewis curled a shot home, but the first of many frustrating offside flags during the half was raised to deny him. Luke Corbett then spurned what looked like a glorious chance when he headed a right wing centre back across goal from a promising position, and Marcus Jackson, who seemed to cover every blade of grass on the pitch during this game, fed Matt Lewis, who curled a shot over the bar. Luke Corbett curled a free kick just wide of the post, while for Nuneaton, substitute Mark Noon scuffed a shot wide inside the penalty area when well placed. On 74 minutes a fine flowing move earned Leamington the second goal that their play merited. The ball was moved quickly up the pitch, and a cute flick by Marcus Jackson into the path of Matt Lewis sent him clear on the right wing to deliver a ball across the area that Luke Corbett had little problem in dispatching past substitute keeper Darren Acton. Shortly after this there was an ugly flashpoint. Michael Tuohy was bought down by an poor challenge from behind, and this sparked a brawl involving almost every player on the pitch. The upshot of this was the dismissal of Nuneaton substitute Danny Spencer, who had only been on the pitch a matter of minutes, and was as baffled

as anyone else as to why he had been sent off. Richard Batchelor and Marcus Jackson also went into the book, as the arguments continued. With eight minutes remaining Leamington put the seal on a fine performance with a third goal. A marauding run by Michael Tuohy saw him bought down as he played the ball in on the right inside the penalty area, and his cross was spilled by Acton straight into the path of a surprised Chris Murphy, who managed to force the ball home. Grant Roscorla almost added a fourth with a good run and shot that was deflected for a corner, but this was a very satisfying way to round of the pre season preparations for Paul Holleran’s side, and will have filled every Brakes fan watching full of hope for the season ahead.
