FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is a “legacy gift”? Legacy gifts are charitable gifts for a future purpose. These gifts can take various forms, including bequests, gift annuities and beneficiary designations. Legacy giving allows you to integrate your charitable values with your family and financial goals.
What is a “charitable bequest?” A bequest is a gift that is legally documented during the donor’s lifetime, but does not take effect until later, typically at the donor’s death. The usual method of documentation is a will. A charitable bequest benefits a recognized charity.
What if I have already written my will and completed my estate planning? Wills can be amended. Estate plans may change over time for many different reasons, and a decision to make a charitable bequest is one of those reasons. Your lawyer can help you make the amendment.
All this sounds like something for older people who have lots of money to give away. What if someone is young or is of modest means? Making a legacy gift is not just for those who have wealth or expect to die soon, but for anyone with a generous spirit who wants to provide an offering for the future of Liberty. A legacy gift could be a percentage of assets that appreciate in value during your lifetime.
Where can I get more information about charitable giving? Your personal lawyer, tax accountant, or professional financial advisor is the best source of information. Additional non-professional information is available from the Presbyterian Foundation web site (www.fdn.pcusa.org) but this should not be used as a substitute for expert professional advice. The Presbyterian Foundation web sites provides examples and introduces other types of charitable giving methods, including charitable gift annuities, donor-advised funds, charitable trusts, gifts of appreciated securities or real estate, and outright cash gifts.
Can I make an anonymous gift? Yes. If you request that your identity as a donor not be publicized or announced, Liberty will certainly respect that wish.
Let this be recorded for future generations, so that a nation yet to be created will praise the Lord. Psalm 102:18
