he Lehman College Department of Ath letics held its annual Awards dinner on Thursday, May 24th. In the Faculty Dining room on the northwest end of the campus. The following awards were presented:
Among those honored at the annual Awards Dinner were Scholar-Athletes of the Year John Orth and Jana Makejeva (photos at left). The Scholar-Athlete awards were presented by Lehman’s new Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Anthony J. Garro, here with Athletics Director Dr. Martin Zwiren (right). Orth was on the tennis team and Jana Makejeva was on both swimming and track & field teams. Makejeva was also named CUNY Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Orth was elected to Phi Beta Kappa honor society.

Lehman’s Male Athlete of the Year was volleyball sensation Anderson Camacho (right), receiving the award from Athletics Director Dr. Martin Zwiren. Female Athlete of the Year Paulette Baldwin was unable to attend the Awards Dinner. She was competing in NCAA track & Field championships in Illinois.
Athletics trainer Chris Hildenbrandt also received the Athletics Department Service Award.
The Paula Soto Award Sakeena Esteves (volleyball/softball)
The coveted Paula Soto Award went to Sakeena Esteves, a member of volleyball and softball teams.

The Charlie Greenberg Memorial Award went to Wendy Martinez,in recognition of her positive contributions to Lehman Athletics as a volunteer and staff member. CUNY Athletics Director Ted Hurwitz made the presentation.
Lehman’s Associate Director of Athletics Ron Carter received the first annual Pedro Vialet Memorial Award for his longstanding commitment to students. Doreen Vialet presented the award in her husband Pedro’s memory.
Sherry Ann Jenkinsreceived the Department of Athletics Service Award, presented by Coca Cola representative Richard Genovese. Jenkins is a student aide in Athletics and member of the women’s varsity tennis team.
