Next Step Read the following verses, looking for common themes, before answering the following questions. Luke 12:16-21; Acts 20:35; 2 Corinthians 9:6-11; Luke 16:9 (New Living Translation) I tell you, use your worldly resources to benefit others and make friends. In this way, your generosity stores up a reward for you in heaven. Is your tendency towards being more of a contributor or consumer? Why? If your answer above was “it depends,” what does it depend upon? How do you know when you have crossed the line into a lifestyle of consumerism? When does being a consumer become detrimental to you and those around you? Since we live in a part of the world where we demand services and where the consumer is King, how do you live with the tension that we are called to contribute? What safe guards are in place or need to be in place for you? How would you define the term “personal preference?” How would you define the term “personal principles?” How do preferences and principles differ? What is the major difference between the two? How do you differentiate between principle and preference decisionmaking when it comes to dealing with: work associates, roommates, spouse, siblings, church worship services, church ministry decisions, friendships, decision-making at home, decision-making at work? Read Matthew 25:14-30 What do you like about this parable, what do you not like, what is confusing to you? What is the obvious point Jesus is making? God has placed you where you are right now to live in such a way that people are drawn to Jesus…in other words, to contribute to the spiritual well being of those whom He has placed around you (Matthew 5:13-16; 2 Corinthians 5:17-20; Acts 17:24-28). Take time this week to take an inventory of the major areas in your life (family relationships, friendships, work, finances, etc.) asking how well are you leveraging/contributing in those areas towards Kingdom/God’s purposes?
