Next Step 1. Describe a childhood friendship that you had. What made that friendship special and memorable? 2. George Barna’s research concluded that “Americans are the loneliest people on earth.” Does that statement surprise you and why do you think it is so? Respond to the following: Psychologist Urie Bronfenbrenner defined meaningful relationships as: “A group of people who possess and implement an irrational commitment to the well being of it’s members.” What would “irrational commitment” look like to you? Do you have an “irrational” commitment to the well being of someone else? 3. What barriers do you have to overcome in initiating a friendship? 4. Read Ecclesiastes 4:8-12 and Proverbs 18:24. Scripture puts high value on a friend that “sticks closer than a brother.” Do you have more friends or less friends than you did five years ago? How much of a felt need is it for you to have deep friendships? What one thing can you do to take a friendship you have to the next level? 5. Read Proverbs 27:17 & Eccl. 10:10. In what ways do friends sharpen you? What important areas in your life do you believe have become more dull since last year? How could a friend sharpen you in those areas? 6. What would a “wise,” “foolish” and “simple” response from you be to this lesson? 2
