POWER ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGIST #SteamEngineers #BoilerOperator #PlantOperator #OperatingEngineer #UtilitiesOperator At 100°C, water boils, releasing steam. With steam you can make power. Power to run generators, engines, you name it! The oil and gas industry runs on power. And Power Engineering Technologists—also known as Stationary Engineers or Steam Engineers— know how to harness steam to create energy. Power Engineering Technologists keep power plants, oil upgraders and refineries running. Can you take the heat and handle the pressure? This career may be for you.
What does this career look like? As a Power Engineering Technologist or Stationary/Steam Engineer, you are in charge of operating and maintaining the equipment and systems that are powered by temperature or pressure. You work with boilers, turbines, steam condensers and other technical machinery. In the oil and gas industry, you are often found in Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) facilities in the oil sands. You may also work in refineries, gas plants, power generation stations or mines. This career has staying power. In Canada there are five levels of Power Engineering and you can advance from one level to the next through a combination of work experience and training courses. You’d begin with monitoring and maintenance, and may work your way up to Chief Engineer positions that supervise teams and oversee very large powerful boilers.

HOW DO I GET HERE? A high school diploma and one-totwo year college diploma in power or stationary engineering is typically required. • To obtain certification, Power Engineers require a college training program in stationary or power engineering and several years of work experience • Stationary engineer trade certification according to class (4th, 3rd, 2nd or 1st class) is compulsory in Nova Scotia and Quebec and available, but voluntary in New Brunswick
HEALTH & SAFETY TRAINING • Standard and emergency first aid • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) • H2S Alive (depending on work facility) • Construction Safety Training System (CSTS) • Pipeline Construction Safety Training (PCST) • Asbestos Safety • Fall Protection • Confined Space Entry • Aerial Lift Training • Respirator Fit Training
What would I do? In an average day, you use calculations, processes and technical knowledge to keep large, complex systems running smoothly – and running safely. You may operate high and low pressure boilers and oversee areas of facilities that manage water treatment, pump operation, instrumentation, electricity, fuels and combustion, air compressors and refrigeration. All with safety in mind. You also may: Monitor and inspect equipment, gauges, alarms, safety devices and meters to detect leaks or malfunctions and to ensure that equipment is operating efficiently and safely. Monitor the levels of boiler water, chemicals and fuel, and make adjustments to maintain the required levels. Identify and scope out opportunities to maximize production, minimize operating costs and eliminate downtime.
