Lower School Dress Code

Dress and Appearance The purpose for a school dress code and uniform is to build a sense of community and pride in that community. It serves to build a team spirit while limiting the distractions often found with the fads of fashion. In addition, it is our intent to provide the structure and the support that will guide students to take pride in a well-groomed personal appearance as well as a quality work product reflective of their very best efforts. On a typical school day, students are required to adhere to the school dress code. Some school activities and certain trips may require a specific type of dress different from the daily uniform. Families will be notified by the school of any adjustments to the dress code for special events or class trips. In general, students are expected to maintain a clean, neat appearance while following the dress code as outlined in the following charts. Students who are not dressed appropriately will receive a “Dress Code Alert” to take home and have signed by a parent/guardian. The “Dress Code Alert” serves as a reminder of what the dress code is for both the child and the parent, because we know that getting all of the details in place can take time, and we hope working together in such a way is helpful. In Lower School, boys and girls are prohibited from having extreme hairstyles, wearing make-up, excessive jewelry and any distracting accessory, such as purses and scarves. In general, jewelry is discouraged due to safety issues and potential loss. Jewelry can get caught in playground equipment and can unintentionally hurt the child or others during play. Boys’ hair length may not reach the collar, extend over the ears or hang in their eyes. Any clothing with slogans, advertisements, etc. is strictly prohibited. All clothing must fit properly and be the appropriate length. Shirts must be tucked in at all times. If there is a discrepancy in a child’s dress and appearance a parent/guardian will be notified. One adjustment to uniform expectations is that students in grades K through 2 will wear the school uniform daily. Students will keep sneakers at school in their locker/cubby space for use on PE days. Students do not need to purchase a PE uniform until they enter Grade 3. Ranney gear (sweatshirts, sweatpants, shirts and shorts may be purchased and worn on Spirit or Dress Down Days for students in grades K-2).
