SECTOR EVALUATION
During the second quarter 2004, the Manufacturing sector registers a growth of 37%, regarding the same period last year. This growth reflects a sustainable trend as compared to the first quarter 2004 (36%). In June, the growth was of 36% as compared to the same month 2003. During the second quarter 2004, it is observed a similar scheme to one offered last year. The Chemical subsector contributed with 41% of sector exports. The second sub-sector is Siderurgical-Metallurgical (31%), followed by the Metal Mechanical sub-sector (16%) and the Non-Metal Mining sub-sector (12%). It is also observed an important raise of the Siderurgical-Metallurgical sector, registering an increase of 68%, as compared to 56% last period from January to March 2004. Unlike the close shown last year, this semester shows an increase in all sub-sectors: Chemical (21%), Metal mechanical (36%) and Non-Metal Mining (35%). EVALUATION BY SUB-SECTORS
During the second quarter, the Manufacturing Sector presents an increase in all the main items, except for Iron and Steel Casting, Electrical Machinery and Equipment and Land Transportation Vehicles of the Metal Mechanical and Siderurgical – Metallurgical sub-sectors. The items presenting the best behavior from April to June are Copper and Copper Made Products (113%), Other Metal Mechanical Products (100%) and Non – electrical Machinery and Equipment (93%). 3.1.
CHEMICAL SUB SECTOR
During the second quarter, it is observed that Bottles, Vials and Similar Products are the main export products of the Chemical sub-sector sharing 7%, even though that means a drop as compared to the same period last year (–37%). The second important item is New Rubber Tires used in Autobuses and Trucks sharing 6% and other Nonadhesive Plates, Sheets 5%, increasing by 93% as compared to the same period last year. The 10 main export products of the sub - sector mentioned below have increased by 15%, a lesser percentage as compared to the sub-sector as a whole (22%)

SIDERURGICAL – METALLURGICAL SUB-SECTOR
In this quarter, the main product exports, the Refined Copper Wire, grew by 150%, regarding the same period last year and representing almost 27% of the sub-sector exports. It is observed an important increase in the most representative products as a whole, registering a growth of 72%, a larger percentage as compared to total showed by this sub-sector. The products registering a greater increase are: Hexagon Zinc Plates (134%), Zinc Plates, Sheets, Strip and Foil (123%), Non Alloyed Zinc (111%) and Refined Copper Bars and Sections (104%).

In this period, it is observed exports of Bakery Machinery and Machinery for the manufacture of macaroni, spaghetti or similar products and Machinery used in the milling industry or for the working of cereals, as well as Boring or Sinking Machinery, self-propelled. These items are re-exported equipment which did not register exports previous periods. The ten products shown in this table have registered an increase of 282% representing 48% of the Metal Mechanic sub-sector exports.
