Through a facilitated case study analysis delegates examine the key elements of effective life risk advice methodology to identify the specific risks and specific circumstances and quantify the impact of those risks, recommend appropriate policy ownership structures, and pre-assess the clients’ existing medical and financial issues before combining policy research appropriate to the clients’ needs. Exploring the underwriting principles associated with the case study information, delegates will learn how to negotiate with underwriters the appropriate terms of the policy (conditions) and implementation.

Panel discussion facilitated by Emily Saint-Smith of riskinfo including Mark Everingham CFP® LRS®, Cherie Feher CFP® LRS® and Sean McGowan CFP® LRS® sharing insights and views on Churn, Under AND non-insurance, fee-for-service versus commissions, EDR schemes, and adequate risk disclosure post-FoFA and others.
This advanced technical session will challenge delegates to: • Identify how life risk products fit in a financial planning client’s portfolio; • Select the right types of cover and blend them together for the best result, minimising overlap; • Examine the danger of self-insurance decisions for clients (made without the right advice); • Classify reasonable advice-based needs calculation methods for key product types; and • Consider best practice principles to facilitate effective claims management – from facilitating for the client to negotiating with the life office.

Mark is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®), Life Risk Specialist (LRS®) and Accredited Estate Planning Strategist (AEPS®) with over 15 years’ industry experience in assisting his clients to make prudent decisions in protecting their wealth and creating certainty for themselves, their families and intended beneficiaries. Prior to establishing PRP’s Queensland offices, Mark held Senior Risk Adviser and Principal Adviser roles with ANZ Private Bank, ANZ Corporate Bank and Experien Insurance Services (a division of Investec Private Bank). With a client base of business owners, professionals and senior executives, Mark has developed a highly skilled advice and facilitation model to deal with the complex estate planning and business succession
With the client’s involvement and that of their accountant and specialist succession lawyer, Mark facilitates discussion surrounding the critical factors of business succession, estate continuity and/or personal risk planning and formulates and implements an action plan to ensure that their intentions are supported by the appropriate legal and accounting structures. Mark is a member of the Financial Planning Association (FPA) and a contributor to the SMSF Education website, an online resource for Self Managed Super Fund Industry. Mark also sits on a number of life insurance advisory boards to assist in the development of product and service and is passionate in continuing to develop a strong professional reputation for his industry. Mark is married to wife Rebecca who have three 3 children. Mark enjoys playing golf, watching cricket, cooking, appreciates good wine, loves the company of good friends & family and with Rebecca is devoted to the development and growth of their children.

Sean McGowan is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® Professional, Accredited Estate Planning Strategist AEPS® and LRS® Life Risk Specialist. He has been working in the Financial Planning industry since 2001. Sean is a Director and shareholder of WLM Financial Services, which was established in 2005.
Emily Saint-Smith Senior Journalist
Emily Saint-Smith joined riskinfo in 2010. She first became interested in the life insurance industry while working at Aviva (now MLC) in Queensland. After relocating to Sydney, Emily honed her skills in marketing roles for insurers including ING (now OnePath) and BT Financial Group. Along with writing regularly for riskinfo’s weekly online news and quarterly magazine publications, Emily is also completing a Masters degree in Creative Writing. She is passionate about raising the profile of financial advice in the Australian market.
Cherie Feher CFP® LRS®
Cherie began her career in financial services in 2002 and her unique experience spans auditing financial advisers to ensure appropriate, ethical advice is provided to investors, whilst meeting a Duty of Care and following their compliance obligations. Presenting technical updates, legislative changes and compliance updates. Cherie enjoys working with clients’ to formulate and implement strategies. Cherie believes ongoing face-to-face reviews are an important part of the client relationship, “they offer a good checkpoint to ensure clients are kept on track and accountable to meet the goals they set for themselves”. Outside of work Cherie is a proud mother of twins, and volunteers her time at North Cronulla Surf Lifesaving Club. Cherie is also working toward her 2nd degree Blackbelt in Taekwondo. Cherie is a representative of Centric Wealth Advisers.
Prior to that Sean worked in boutique, medium-sized and institutional financial planning firms. Sean holds a Bachelor of Economics (double major in Economics and Finance) from the University of NSW and a Diploma of Financial Planning (DFP) from Deakin University. Sean is also an Accredited Estate Planning Strategist and Life Risk Specialist, being one of the first people to attain these qualifications in the Australian and global marketplace. His passion is providing client-focused strategic financial advice and his approach is to meet the specific needs of each client through a disciplined approach whereby he will discuss their needs, evaluate their options, prepare a written customised Statement of Advice (Financial Plan), present and explain the strategies and implement the decisions.Sean seeks to build long-term relationships with his clients by helping to manage their finances on an ongoing basis. As most people’s situations continually change, Sean reviews his client’s position regularly to ensure that they are making the most efficient use of and protecting the resources that they have. Sean also closely manages the integration of services provided by other professionals such as Accountants, Lawyers/Solicitors, Finance Brokers, Stockbrokers and Property Investment Specialists to ensure that all his client’s professional service requirements are addressed. Sean maintains a regular disciplined approach to ongoing education to ensure that he stays on top of the ever-changing legislative landscape and his knowledge of investment markets.
