2015-16 MEN’S GOLF PROSPECTUS

Paul Del Vecchio optimistic that Vikings can improve on 2014-15 showing Paul Del Vecchio enters his fifth year as the head men’s golf coach at Augustana and he is looking for more consistency from his team. The Vikings finished the 2014-15 season with an overall record of 80-84 in invitationals and placed sixth in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin after moving up to fifth a year earlier. “We are going to have to get more consistent,” said Del Vecchio, who inherited a team that finished last in the CCIW in his first year and has made steady improvement ever since. “We had a real good fall but the spring was a struggle for us. The weather was a factor but it was the same for every team so that is not an excuse. We just need to play better when we have the opportunity to make up ground.” Del Vecchio points to the 2015 CCIW Tournament as a classic example of that. The conference tournament is four rounds (72 holes) and the Vikings shot 311 on the first day and had scores of 308 and 302 on days three and four. It was the day two total of 325 that prevented Del Vecchio’s team from moving up in the standings.

and junior Michael Jacobs (Freeport Aquin Catholic HS, Freeport, Ill.) are good bets to be in the team’s top-five. Juniors Nicholas Hermanson (Beecher HS, Beecher, Ill.) and Kiefer Kious (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) and sophomore Ben Groselak (Lemont HS, Lemont, Ill.) are returning letter winners. Between the three they played in a total of 12 rounds last year. Del Vecchio is also high on incoming freshman Alex Sierra (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.). “I think we are going to have some competition for spots in our top-five lineup and that is a good thing,” said Del Vecchio. “This will be a case of somebody stepping up and grabbing hold of the position in our starting lineup. I think we have the people who can do that.”

“We are making progress,” said Del Vecchio. “Our goal for this year is to place in the top four of the CCIW Tournament and we think that is attainable.” After finishing eighth in 2011-12 the Vikings were seventh in 2012-13 and fifth in 2013-14 before last year’s sixth place finish. “I really think that our top three players will be able to be consistent each time out and give us a chance to be successful,” commented Del Vecchio. “We will need to build some depth at the lower end of our lineup.” Augustana lost four letter winners from a year ago but eight return. Senior David Ferlmann (Peoria Notre Dame HS, Dunlap, Ill.) and juniors Tanner Obal (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and Eric Swanson (Vernon Hills HS, Vernon Hills, Ill.) figure to be the team leaders heading into 2015-16. Ferlmann was the team MVP a year ago after leading the squad with an average of 77.7 per round. He played in 11 events and 20 rounds and recorded three top-10 finishes, including a victory at the Vike-Scot Shootout with a score of 73. Obal played all 22 rounds (12 events) as a sophomore and averaged 78.1 per round with a team-high four top-10 finishes. He saved his best round of the year for last when he recorded a score of 74 on the final day of the CCIW Tournament. Swanson was voted the Vikings’ Most Improved Player in 2014-15 after averaging 79.3 over 22 rounds and 12 events. He had three top-10 finishes. Sophomore Gabe Askam (Jacobs HS, West Dundee, Ill.) 2015-16 MEN’S GOLF - 3

HEAD COACH PAUL DEL VECCHIO The 2015-16 season marks Paul Del Vecchio’s fifth at the helm of the Augustana men’s golf team. During his first four seasons, the Vikings have improved each year in head-tohead winning percentage. In 2014-15 Del Vecchio’s squad posted a head-to-head record of 80-64-1 (.555), including a sixth-place finish among 28 teams at the NCAA Division III Midwest Region Classic and a fifth-place performance at the 21-team Augustana Invitational. The Vikings finished in a tie for sixth at the 2015 CCIW Championship. Del Vecchio was named the head men’s golf coach at Augustana in August of 2011, replacing Grey Giovanine who stepped aside after 12 years to concentrate full time on his role as head coach of the Viking men’s basketball program. For two seasons (2009-10 and 201011), Del Vecchio served as a volunteer assistant under Giovanine. Prior to coming to Augustana, Del Vecchio spent two years as a teaching professional at Cannon Flats Driving Range on the Rock Island Arsenal. He was the head professional at Pinnacle Country Club for seven years after holding similar positions at Fox Run Golf Course in West Branch, Iowa and Brown Deer Golf Club in Coralville, Iowa. In addition, he’s held assistant golf pro positions at Short Hills Country Club in East Moline, Illinois and Arthur Pack and Sun City Vistoso Golf Courses in Tucson, Arizona. Del Vecchio, a Davenport, Iowa native, played collegiately at Pima Community College in Tucson. He’s been a Class A member of the PGA since 1995 and competed in two Ben Hogan tour events as a professional. He recorded six top 20 finishes in mini-tour events as well. He played in two PGA events during his career, the 2000 and 2005 John Deere Classic. He currently owns a pair of Anytime Fitness health clubs in the Quad-Cities and resides in Bettendorf, Iowa with his wife Heather and children Andrew, Sophia and Spencer. “I believe in the simple things and working on the short game,” he said when asked about his coaching philosophy. “Everybody likes to hit the ball a long way but it is what you do around the green that can really translate into lowering your score. I am a firm believer in repetition in practice and that is what we will work on.” Augustana Director of Athletics Mike Zapolski added at the time of Del Vecchio’s hiring, “Paul has an extensive golf background, and his long-time affiliation with the PGA and many years of teaching experience will be a tremendous asset for our current players while serving as an attractive bonus in the recruiting process. After volunteering his time with us the last two years, Paul is very familiar with Augustana and has an exciting vision on how he wants to build our men’s golf program.” THE DEL VECCHIO RECORD DUAL MEETS INVITATIONALS YEAR WON LOSS .PCT WON LOSS TIE .PCT CCIW FINISH 2011-12 0 0 .000 54 94 .365 Eighth 2012-13 0 0 .000 63 88 .417 Seventh 2013-14 0 1 .000 82 81 .503 Fifth 2014-15 1 0 1.000 79 64 1 .552 Sixth-T CAREER 1 1 .500 278 327 1 .460

2014-15 MEN’S GOLF REVIEW

Vikings finish in a tie for sixth in the CCIW; finish 80-64-1 head-to-head; David Ferlmann named MVP; Jake Groselak named to Capital One Academic All-District team The 2014-15 season marked the third consecutive year in which Coach Paul Del Vecchio’s Augustana men’s golf squad improved its head-to-head winning percentage. The Vikings went 80-64-1 (.555) this year and finished in a tie for sixth at the 2015 CCIW Championship on April 30-May 2. Augustana’s four-round total at the Rail in Springfield, Illinois was 1246. THE COLLEGE CONFERENCE OF ILLINOIS & WISCONSIN Now in its 70th year, the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) enjoys a reputation as the “Best Small-College Conference in the Nation.” The league was formed with nine charter members (Augustana, Carthage, Elmhurst, Illinois College, Illinois Wesleyan, Lake Forest, Millikin, North Central and Wheaton) on April 26, 1946 in Jacksonville, Illinois. Competition opened in the 1946-47 academic year as the College Conference of Illinois.

Augustana owns more CCIW team championships than any other school in the league with 183 total. Of those 183, the men have won 142 and 41 belong to the women.

Carthage left the conference in 1952 but returned in 1961. In 1967 the name was changed to the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin to recognize Carthage, which had moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin from Carthage, Illinois in 1962, and Carroll, which entered the league in 1955.

AUGUSTANA’S ALL-TIME TEAM CCIW CHAMPIONS

As is often the case with athletic conferences, CCIW membership has experienced some changes since the league’s inception. After Carthage left in 1952, Illinois College withdrew the following year. Elmhurst and Wheaton left following the 1959-60 academic year. Wheaton rejoined for all sports but football in 1967 and then for football in 1970. Elmhurst rejoined in the fall of 1967 for all sports but football and for football in the 1968 season. Carroll joined officially with the 1955 spring sports seasons. Carthage returned in 1961 and North Park entered the following fall. Lake Forest dropped out at the end of the 1962-63 year. The last change in CCIW membership came following the 1991-92 season when Carroll withdrew. Now eight members strong, the CCIW continues its tradition of athletic and academic excellence. The league sanctioned women’s sports for the first time in the 1986-87 school year and Augustana participated in the first ever women’s competition. That was on September 14, 1986 when the Vikings met North Central in a volleyball match that was held at Elmhurst College.

The CCIW began to award championships in men’s golf since the league’s inception in 1946-47. Since that time the Vikings have won the conference title a total of 16 times.
