Village Life in Cambodia—ALWS Awareness Week 2014

Message from Lutheran Education Australia ‘Excuse me – can you please tell me where the bathroom is?’ This is a question so often asked in Australia. Quite simple really. Whilst recently attending the USA Lutheran Education Convocation in Milwaukee, it was again an easy question with a straight forward, clean and readily available solution. Let’s now go to Cambodia. For in this close neighbour of ours, there are only one in four people who have access to reasonable sanitation. Diarrhoea is a real threat. Around the world, a child dies of diarrhoea, and related sicknesses, every 15 seconds. Did you know that Australian Lutheran World Service has a $65 plan to provide a latrine to a Cambodian family or village? You can learn all about this using the Awareness Week materials. Awareness Week will open your mind, challenge your thinking, and hopefully move you and your Lutheran school community to help.

Excuse me – can please tell me how your Lutheran school community can support our sisters and brothers in Cambodia?’ LEA continues to appreciate the opportunity of working with Australian Lutheran World Service and LCA Mission International in supporting our overseas brothers and sisters in Christ. The LEA website (http:// www.lutheran.edu.au/teaching-and-learning/servicelearning/) is full of relevant and useful service learning information for staff and schools as you prepare for 2014 ALWS Awareness Week as well as the wide range of other local, national and international service learning opportunities. May God bless us all as we support the needs of those in great need. Stephen Rudolph Executive Director, Lutheran Education Australia

Village Life in Cambodia—ALWS Awareness Week 2014

Message from LCA Mission International Making a difference, one person at a time “I know what it is like to be poor, I come from a poor family, I want to help my people and tell them about God’s love.” These are the words of Srey Liak, a young woman from Cambodia, which reflect the love of Jesus and the power of the Spirit of God working in and through the many young people and older members of the Cambodian community. God’s love in Word and actions is transforming people in Cambodia. Srey Liak was eight years old when her father died. She grew up in an impoverished family in the village of Phum Krus in the Kampong Chhnang province of Cambodia. As the oldest of 4 children, Srey Liak shouldered the burden of responsibility for feeding and educating her siblings and caring for her grandmother. Life was tough with no work in the village for a young girl like her. She spiralled into depression and suicidal thinking. However following an invitation to come to the Life Centre - the ministry centre of Lutheran World Mission (LWM), Srey Liak came to know Jesus and his love for her.

Following her baptism in 2010, Srey Liak served as an intern in the ministry. In 2012 she moved to the capital city of Phnom Penh to commence her studies at the Phnom Penh Bible School, and had the opportunity to stay in the student hostel provided by Lutheran World Mission and the emerging Lutheran Church in Cambodia. Two thirds of Cambodia’s population today is under 25 years of age. As Srey Liak and many of these young and older people experience the practical love of Jesus they receive hope. Today they share a deep desire and now strive to make a difference in the lives of many other people in their country. They are using their education to make a difference in the lives of others. The Lutheran Church of Australia has been sharing the love of Jesus in many ways in Cambodia for many years, beginning with Australian Lutheran World Service’s involvement immediately following the horrors of the Pol Pot regime. Today the ministry of sharing the love of Jesus is expanded through the work of the Lutheran Church of Australia’s partnership with Lutheran World Mission and the emerging Lutheran Church in Cambodia. As a student in a Lutheran school in Australia and through your partnership with ALWS and the Lutheran Church of Australia you are making a difference in the lives of so many people. Your action, love and care help to bring hope and to transform the lives of young and older people. Rev Neville Otto Secretary of the LCA / Director for Mission Glenice Hartwich Program Officer Lutheran Church of Australia Mission International
