Instructions to complete “Modern Mandala” earrings: Step 1 Cut 2.5 feet of FireLine thread. Loop the thread around the component and tie a surgeon's knot, leaving a six-inch tail. Pull the knot tight. Thread a size 12 beading needle on the long end of the thread. Step 2 Using the 2.5 feet of beading thread, string two 3mm howlite beads. Bring the needle behind the component, over the component, and back down through the last bead strung. Pull the thread tight. Repeat for the rest of the row stringing one bead at a time until you have stitched a total of 16 – 3mm howlite beads. (See Brick Stitch Around a Component Technique). Step 3 To finish the row, pass the needle down through the first bead added from Step 2, keeping the needle behind the component. Pass through the center of the component and pass back up through the first bead. Step 4 To begin a second row of brick stitch, string two 2.5mm silver beads. Pass the needle over the thread loop next to the last bead exited in the previous row from Step 3. Pull the thread tight. Repeat for the rest of the row stringing one bead at a time until you have stitched a total of 14 - 2.5mm silver beads. Step 5 Continue using brick stitch to stitch the following rows on the inside of the hoop. Row 3: 6 – 3mm goldenrod beads Row 4: 1 – size 8 orange seed bead Step 6 Exiting from the size 8 orange seed bead, weave the thread back and forth through the beadwork to secure. Trim excess beading thread with scissors. Repeat for the 6 inch tail from Step 1. Step 7 Open one 6mm jump ring (see Opening and Closing a Jump Ring Technique). Attach the jump ring to the circle component in between two 3mm howlite beads. Close the jump ring. Step 8 Open one 12mm jump ring. Attach the jump ring to the 6mm jump ring from Step 7 and one ball post earring. Close the jump ring. Step 9 Repeat Steps 1 – 8 for the second earring.
