WSU TRACK & FIELD HOME FOR COUGAR INDOOR/MULTIS The Washington State track and field teams return to Pullman for the second and final home indoor meet of 2018...Cougar Indoor/Multis meet will be held Fri., Feb. 2 and Sat., Feb. 3, at the WSU Indoor Facility...Mondo track features a 60m straightaway and 200m oval…jumping and throwing field events are contested on the turf inside the oval...this is collegiate and post-collegiate meet...women’s pentathlon (five events) will take place Friday, Feb. 2 and the men’s heptathlon (seven events) will start Feb. 2 and conclude Feb. 3... tentative time schedule of events is on page 5 of this release...spectators admitted without charge...no live stats and no webcast...complete results will be posted at www.wsucougars.com when available. WAYNE PHIPPS, DIR. OF WSU CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK & FIELD Wayne Phipps (University of British Columbia ‘91) is in his fourth season with the Washington State track and field program...Phipps led the Cougar men’s cross country program back-to-back-to-back NCAA Championships at-large berth appearances...Cougs finished 21st in 2017, 14th in 2016 - the highest in 32 years, and 26th in 2015....in track and field seasons, mentored studentathletes to WSU top-ten performances 24 times in the indoor season and 47 times in the outdoor season....there have also been conference all-academic honors awarded to WSU student-athletes 51 times in cross country, 88 times in indoor track and 86 times in outdoor track...Phipps became the 15th men’s coach and the second coach for the combined men’s and women’s program at WSU on July 1, 2014, after 19 years at the University of Idaho...while at Idaho, Phipps was honored 14 times as a conference coach of the year and led the Vandals to a record 16 conference titles. COUGARS HIGHLIGHTS FROM UW INVITATIONAL/NEW MEXICO TEAM INVITE At the UW Invitational Jan. 26-27, Devon Bortfeld had a notable start to her senior indoor career: 5k time of 16:26.73 (8th overall/4th collegiate) and PR mile time of 4:50.96 - fifth-best in WSU all-time records...Chandler Teigen ran a 3k PR time of 8:10.08 for 19th in the elite field section..Colton Johnsen, a January transfer from EWU won his 3k section with a PR time of 8:17.08...men’s DMR of Paul Ryan, Reid Muller, Justin Janke and Teigen finished third in a time of 9:54.04...in the women’s 3k invitational section, Vallery Korir placed 12th a PR time of 9:29.71...at the New Mexico Team Invite Jan. 27, Brock Eager won the men’s 35# weight throw with a season-best distance of 20.25m/66-5 1/4... Aoife Martin threw the women’s 20# weight 17.41m/ 57-1 1/2 (2nd place), her third PR of this year and 8th-best in WSU records...Regyn Gaffney ran a season-best 60m time of 7.51 (4th)...PRs were garnered Jordyn Tucker in 60m of 7.60 (6th), Alissa Brooks-Johnson in 60m hurdles prelim of 8.77, Marlow Schulz in 800m of 2:10.40 (4th overall/1st collegiate), Zach Smith in men’s 200m at 21.39 (2nd), season-best by Ja’Maun Charles in 200m of 21.70...frosh Mitch Jacobson tied for third in the men’s high jump (PR 2.02m/6-7 1/2)...Sander Moldau made WSU debut in pole vault at 4.90m/16-0 3/4 (2nd)...Robby Flores broke 15m in triple jump with PR 15.33m/50-3 1/2 (3rd)...WSU women’s 4x400m relay squad of Jelena Grujic, Schulz, Brooks-Johnson and Zorana Grujic took second place with a time of 3:47.94.
