» NEWS AND NOTES

This Week in UNO Baseball - The Privateers return home next week for a mid-week contest against Jackson State.

The Competition - Reid Russell was named Southland Conference Hitter of the Week after

hitting four homers to run his season total to eight. Russell is on a 12-game hitting streak entering the weekend. The Cardinals’ weekend starters have combined for a 4-2 record and each have an ERA under 3.00.

Last Outing - The Privateers won their first road conference series of the season, taking

2 of 3 from Stephen F. Austin. UNO scored 19 runs on the first day of the series and hit seven homers during the weekend.

Weather Forecast - Rain is supposed to come through Wednesday night and clear out during the day Thursday. The rest of the weekend is projected to be clear.

UNO as a Team - The Privateers graduated five pitchers off of last season’s team. Also, Kevin

Kelleher was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 12th round of the 2015 MLB Draft. - UNO won 13 of their first 15 games of the season and 13 straight at home. It’s the best 15-game start for a Privateer squad since 1981 (14-1). - The Privateers have a brand new coaching staff: Brett Stewart came over from Northwest Florida State and is the new hitting coach. Lee Bryant is in his first year with UNO as the new pitching coach. Quinn Bright has joined the team as a volunteer assistant. - UNO has scored 10 or more runs seven times this season including a season-best 19 in the series opener at Stephen F. Austin.

UNO Individually - Bryan Warzek threw seven shutout innings on Tuesday and struck out five

batters for his first collegiate victory against South Alabama. Warzek lowered his ERA from 6.50 to 4.68. - Daniel Martinez is at seven saves for the season, which currently ranks tied for third in the nation behind Chris Rivera of Long Beach State and Max Engelbrekt of Oregon State who both have eight saves. - Sam Capielano hit his first career homer and went 3-for-4 in the series finale against Stephen F. Austin. The breakout game ended a stretch of four games without a hit for Capielano. - Dakota Dean homered in three straight games to run his home run total to four. Dean has also drawn 17 walks and is second on the team in on-base percentage (.505). Dean had an 11-game hitting streak snapped on Sunday at Stephen F. Austin. - Riley Hodge moved to 3-0 on the season and pitched a season-high 7.0 innings on 3/19 at Stephen F. Austin. Hodge has 31 strikeouts to just 5 walks in 31.0 innings this season and has gone at least six frames in his last four outings. - Zach Wilson picked up his first save as a Privateer in his second appearance. Wilson struck out seven batters including striking out the side after entering Tuesday’s game with the bases loaded and no out in the fifth.

EXTRA BASES COMEBACK KIDS - The Privateers are 9-2 in games when the opponent scores first. In all three games against Stephen F. Austin, the Lumberjacks struck the scoreboard first. UNO has been equally as stout with a lead as the Privateers are undefeated (12-0) when leading after the seventh inning.

TO THE FUTURE

POWER DRIVE - Through 20 games, the Privateers have already surpassed their home run total from 2015. UNO hit eight homers as a team last year and is currently tied for second in the Southland in round trippers this season with 18. Only Lamar (19) has more homers entering the week.

“We’re excited about the six guys we ended up signing,” said Dean. “We wanted to get a few arms and that’s what we did. We feel like the arms can come in and make an immediate impact for us. To be successful in this conference, pitching and defense are two vital parts of the game which we needed to improve.”

HISTORIC START - UNO won their first 13 games at home and was 13-2 after 15 games. It was the fastest 15game start in the program since Ron Maestri guided the 1981 team to a 14-1 start after the first 15 games.

NO HEZITATION - Hezekiah Randolph had a 12-game hitting streak from 2/24-3/13. It was snapped in the series finale against Sam Houston State. Randolph is tied for the eighth longest hitting streak in program history, a mark he achieved during his freshman season in 2014. That year, Randolph collected a hit in 16 straight games on his way to being named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American. BOYS OF SUMMER - Nine Privateers took part in summer ball. Three pitchers (Daniel Martinez, Hunter Medine, and Jarred Taylor) were teammates wtih the Acadiana Cane Cutters of the Texas Collegiate League. Martinez won TCL Pitcher of the Year honors after going 8-1 with a 1.40 ERA. Martinez also became the first pitcher in TCL history to win the league’s pitching triple crown as he he led the league in wins, ERA, and strikeouts (43). Hezekiah Randolph hit four home runs and drove in 22 while hitting .287 for the Forest City Owls of the Coastal Plains League.

Head coach Blake Dean has added six junior college players to the University of New Orleans Privateers baseball roster during the 2015 NCAA Early Signing Period. The class includes four pitchers: Hunter Beard (Mobile, Ala.), William Griffin (Kennesaw, Ga.), Rafael Martinez (Miami, Fla.), and Kollin Schrenk (Charlotte, N.C.). Dean has also added a catcher in John Cable out of Roswell, Ga. and a first baseman in Dakota Phillips from Nacogdoches, Texas to the class.

Cable is primarily a catcher, but can also play first base. Cable graduated from River Ridge HS in Roswell, Ga. before going on to play at Darton where he hit .342 in 58 games and 184 at-bats. Cable finished second on the team in RBIs with 43. Cable also had 19 multi-hit games in his first season at the JUCO level while earning second-team All-Conference recognition. In high school, Cable was an All-Region and All-County member. Phillips, whose primary position is first base, played for Alvin where he hit .272 during last season. Before that, Phillips played at Nacogdoches HS in Texas. In 2012 at Nacogdoches, Phillips was named First Team All-State. Phillips was also awarded Defensive Player of the Year and was selected to the 2015 Texas-New Mexico Junior College All-Star Game. Phillips also made the Dean’s List while at Alvin. “We wanted to add a couple of left handed bats to our lineup with power. With Phillips and Cable we’ve got two guys, we feel can come in and swing it right away for us,” said Dean. Beard was a member of the 2015 NJCAA Championship winning squad at Northwest Florida State. He also holds a school record for the lowest season earned run average: in 18 appearances, Beard posted an ERA of 0.81. Beard also allowed just 13 hits in his 22.1 innings pitched for the season. Also adding to the pitching staff for ‘16 is Griffin who is at Georgia Highlands. A Kennesaw, Ga. native, Griffin was named Pitcher of the Year twice while at Kennesaw Mountain HS. In 2015 at Georgia Highlands, Griffin struck out 38 batters over 38.2 innings of work and carried an ERA of 1.40 in 34 appearances. In his final eight games of the season, Griffin allowed just two runs. Kollin Schrenk has also been signed to help the depth of the pitching staff for next season. Currently, Schrenk is at State College of Florida Manatee where last season, he appeared in 17 games with one start and pitched to a 3.67 ERA. Schrenk posted a 2-1 record in his freshman season. A native of Charlotte, Schrenk prepped at Ardrey Kell HS where he was an All-Conference selection. Out of high school, Schrenk was drafted in the 38th round by the Philadelphia Phillies. Rafael Martinez, a transfer from Miami Dade JC, adds another arm to the class. Martinez is a year removed from being a part of a state championship team at his high school (American Senior). In his first collegiate season, Martinez pitched to a 2.34 ERA in 10 appearances (one start). Martinez threw at least six innings and gave up one run or fewer three times last year at Miami Dade.

STREAKS AND TIDBITS - Hezekiah Randolph is tied for the league lead in doubles with eight. - Shawn Semple is third in the Southland in strikeouts with 39. - Jay Robinson moved his batting average to .370 after collecting three hits vs. South Alabama. - Five of the top ten in runs scored in the Southland are Privateers. - The Privateers’ 15th win came on 3/19 against Stephen F. Austin, which surpassed the 2015 win total. - UNO is tied with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in fewest strikeouts at the plate with 121. - In the season opener vs. Alcorn State, Aaron Palmer became the first Privateer since Nick Schwaner to have at least six RBI in a game. - Preston Marsh hit his first home run of the season in the series opener against Sam Houston State on 3/11. - The Privateers series win vs. SHSU was their second Southland series win since joining the league in 2014.

Head Coach - blake dean Blake Dean was named the University of New Orleans’ seventh head coach in its 45 year history during the summer of 2015 following a breif stint as the school’s interim head coach following the retirement of Ron Maestri. Blake Dean spent the 2015 season with the Privateers as an assistant coach, instructing the team’s hitters and infielders. He spent the 2014 campaign as the team’s volunteer assistant, and was promoted following that season. During his first year as a volunteer coach, the former LSU standout worked with freshmen Samuel Capielano and Hezekiah Randolph, who were both recognized as Freshmen All-Americans at the conclusion of the season.

THE DEAN’S LIST - Played collegiately at LSU under Paul Mainieri and left as one of the Tigers’ all-time leaders in several offensive categories, ranking in the top five in hits, RBIs, total bases, home runs, doubles, and runs. - Was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 10th round of the 2009 draft, but returned to Baton Rouge for his senior season. A year later, the Dodgers selected Dean in the 8th round. - In rookie ball, Dean played 59 games with the Ogden Raptors and hit .302 with five homers and 35 RBIs. The next year, Dean clubbed seven homers and drove in 44 runs with Class A Great Lakes. - Dean began his coaching career as an assistant in 2014. In his second year, the team’s batting average spiked upwards 23 points from .244 to .267. - Dean’s brother, Dakota will debut with the Privateers this season after transferring from Northwest Florida State. - Joins a list of 16 Division I coaches who will navigate their firs season with a program and is the only first year coach in the Southland Conference.

Other highlights for Dean’s rookie season as a coach included the progression of many hitters, like Andre Damiens averaging .310 (13-for-42) over the final 11 games of the season. Senior Reese Kanter also improved his batting average under Dean’s tutelage, doing so by 43 points from his junior season to his senior campaign. The Privateers also had 19 games in 2014 in which they collected 10 or more hits. A native of Crestview, Fla. and an eighth round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2010, Dean was a highly accomplished collegiate player at LSU, still holding numerous marks in the Tigers record books. He was also a prominent member of LSU’s 2009 World Series Championship team.
