SNOWFLAKES IN OCTOBER!

Lyme School

Serving the Lyme Community for over 100 years

Snowflakes... in October?! .... Please! That dog just don’t hunt! However, I seem to be unable to convince the weather or the meteorologists that we somehow missed summer this year. So after a great deal of reluctance we have compiled the contact numbers and email addresses to use in our snow day notification process. For those that are unfamiliar with this process, on the days where there will be a delay or cancelation you will be called at about 6am. You will also be contacted through email if you have why is the #@!$ listed an email address on your emergency phone ringing at contact card. If you would prefer a specific email or phone number to be used am in these cases, please contact the school via phone or email and we will update the contact system. We will also continue update local radio and television stations.

One important detail is that the message you will receive is recorded, so please forgive the cheerful tenor in my voice. I recorded it when 1) I was awake 2) it was a reasonable hour of the day and 3) I was in a reasonable mood (which would not be the case if I recorded myself at 5 am the morning of the snow day). Secondly, as it is a recording, don’t bother to engage in a debate about the merit of the decision as my likely response will likely sound like a dial tone. In fact if you wish to debate the decision please call the superintendent as he is responsible for making it. However, if you feel like it was a good decision... my number is 795-2125.

Fourth Grade Investigates Wild Weather!

Speaking of snow days, there have been some that have suggested that somehow I control such snow events, but despite my attempts to control weather (through a series of highly ritualistic chants which consist of me pleading, “Please only snow on the weekends!”, with my skis held above my head) there are apparently some weather events that get by without my notice (or actually in spite of). The fourth grade this week has been studying these events (revealing just how ineffective my efforts have been). The events include Tornados, Blizzards, Tsunamis, Wildfires, Floods, and Hurricanes. Each group is creating presentations that explain how these events are formed, include pictures which show the effects before and after, illustrations of what the event looks like while it is occurring, and six particular facts that relate to it. This project focuses on developing the students sense of meteorology, cause and effect, communication skills, early citation skills and group dynamic skills. The poster is assessed based upon a rubric that the students use to guide their work. So maybe we can ask the blizzard group why snow falls in October despite the fact that we all may agree that it is a few weeks too early - then again we live in New Hampshire.
