Professor Plutonium Visits Y5 Ahead of Year 5’s visit to Winchester Science Centre, and to mark the start of their ‘Chemical Chaos’ project, Professor Plutonium visited to demonstrate some exciting chemical reactions. He taught us about reversible and irreversible reactions, and explained ways to separate a solute from a solution. It was a great start to what promises to be a fascinating project. Books Glorious Books The end of the ‘Books Glorious Books’ project that Year 3 had been working on meant a chance to share their home learning work and books stories they had written with Year 1 pupils. The Year 1 children thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the Year 3’s learning, and they were very proud to share the stories they had written and illustrated themselves. It marked the culmination of a project that really brought out the love of reading in many children. Year 1 Handwriting There are many ways you can support your child in developing their handwriting. Practising the school’s expected standard for cursive script is a great way to help your child develop their writing to and earn their rewards of a ‘perfect pencil’. Our school website demonstrates our rainbow cursive script. http:// www.hillviewprimary.co.uk/english/ (Select ‘Rainbow Cursive Script’ approximately half way down the page.) Coffee Morning Mrs Jenkins would like to thank everyone who attended last week’s coffee morning which focussed on first aid for children. She’d also like to thank Mr Garner for his interesting first aid session. If anybody would like to provide any suggestions for aspects of first aid which they would like to learn about, please advise Mrs Jenkins, who will be able to include it as part of the next session planned for May 2017. Our next coffee morning will take place on Thursday 1st December and we will be welcoming the Waitrose Community Champion, who will be joining us to talk about food at Christmas. More information will be provided closer to the time. Steamer Point Year 6 were very excited about their trip to Steamer Point this Monday. As part of the visit, they practiced orienteering, map reading and exploring coastal features. The skills children gain from visits reach far beyond what is achievable for learning based solely in the classroom. We look forward to more exciting, educational and thought-provoking visits over the rest of the year.
Anti-Bullying Week Next week marks Anti-Bullying week here at Hill View. Through weeks like this and regular open discussion we aim to make bullying an issue of the past. To help bring bullying to everyone’s attention, and to reiterate the theme of this year’s Anti-Bullying week, we have the amazing 2 Board and a Passion theatre company coming into school to perform their new show ‘Supercharged’ for Years 1 - 6 on Wednesday. This promises to be an entertaining and educational show.
Year 5 Update Forms The last few remaining Year 5 Student Update forms must be returned as a matter of urgency. These are essential in making sure our records are up to date.
Reading Focus Books are GREAT! Have a look at the 2016 great book guide from the Book Trust. The list of books are chosen specifically to help your child get hooked on reading. Why not give one a go this week? http://www.booktrust.org.uk/ books/children/great-booksguide

Tennis Roadshow West Hants Club will be visiting Hill View on Tuesday 15th to provide a tennis road show for children in Years 1 & 2. Every child will enjoy half an hour of tennis playing and guidance from one of the coaches at West Hants Club. This will take place during school hours, to ensure everyone will be able to join in. A Message From Mrs Jones During the last academic year our hardworking PTFA, under the steer of Lisa Philogene-Jones, Karen Mead, Hannah Clarke and Danielle Jenkins have worked tirelessly with you to raise funds to replace the school adventure playground. The amazing events have ranged from the school discos, ice cream sales, secret present rooms, a story telling evening and a Pamper evening, to name but a few. I congratulate and thank them for their efforts and their determined support of the school. The children have been consulted in the selection of the equipment they would like to have and we are awaiting the final design and costings from tenders before placing the order. We are aiming for the installation of the new equipment for the Easter holidays so that our current Year 6 children have an opportunity to enjoy it before they leave us. As ever the PTFA continue to be inventive and creative in their fundraising events and have a number of events planned for this year.
HV Sports Update Well done to the Year 5 boys who played at Littledown Predator football tournament last week. They played very well, won 3 matches and drew a 4th. Unfortunately they did not make it through to the next stage based on goal difference. We are very proud of how they played and represented our school. Next week’s ‘free’ after school netball and football will not be running due to parent consultations taking place. From the following week the clubs will be finishing at 4:15pm sharp due to the colder, darker evenings. This does not include paid clubs. Paid and JSC clubs will be running as usual. This week’s sports trophy winner was Poppy Jenkins-Chen in Year 3. Well done!
The role of the ASCENT values in our school means they run deep in everything we do. Our learning values are another value set we instil in our children. They aim to teach children skills that are fundamental to the learning process. We learn about the values through the use of learning values characters, and stories associated to them. Characters such as Byron the Beautiful Butterfly and Charlie the Collaborative Chimp make the values relatable to children and their stories explain how the values apply to their own lives.

Hill View Primary School PTFA 08/11/16
The PTFA held their AGM on Tuesday 1st November. This gave them a chance to celebrate their fundraising totals over the least year and reflect on the hard work they have carried out to help the school and its children. In 2014/15, the PTFA raised £8828.90. This year (2015/16) they raised a staggering £13,797.04. This is a phenomenal amount and they should be hugely proud of themselves, along with everyone who joined in and supported them throughout the year. This year the PTFA organised lots of events including some that raised several thousand pounds in one go. The Autumn disco alone raised £1012.34, while the Queens 90th Fair raised £2754.59! Everything the PTFA raises goes towards projects that benefit both the school and the children, and we’re hugely proud of how active they are. Of course, it’s not just about fund raising. The PTFA organise many events that are fundamental to life at Hill View. From story telling evenings to Christmas card projects to year end discos, the PTFA are involved in all of it. From all at Hill View, we’d like to say well done to the PTFA for their hard work over the last year, and thank you.

Anti-Bullying Week 2016 Top anti-bullying tips
Tips for parents and carers If your child is being bullied or you think they might be, here are some tips on how to talk to them and prevent further bullying. ◊ If your child is being bullied, don’t panic. Explain to your child that the bullying is not their fault and together you will sort this out. ◊ Bullying is never acceptable; and should always be taken seriously. It is never your child’s fault if they’ve been bullied. ◊ Try and establish the facts. It can be helpful to keep a diary of events. If the bullying is online, save or copy images and text. ◊ Find out what your child wants to happen. Help to identify steps you can take; and the skills they have to help sort out the situation. Make sure you always keep them informed about any actions you decide to take. ◊ You may be tempted to tell your child to retaliate but this can have unpredictable results. Your child might get into trouble or get even more hurt. Rather – role play non-violent ways they can respond to children that are bullying them (e.g. “I don’t like it when you say that to me / do that to me. Stop.”); show them how to block or unfriend people if the bullying is online and help them identify other friends or adults that can support them. ◊ Encourage your child to get involved in activities that build their confidence and esteem, and help them to form friendships outside of school (or wherever the bullying is taking place).
