Lost, But Not Found !

Science Dunking

Lyme School

Serving the Lyme Community for over 100 years

Did you ever wonder where that matching sock went after you swear you put both into the laundry? Well apparently it finds its way to the Lyme School’s lost and found. Missing a hat, coat, glove, shoe or pants (I’m not sure how one loses track of their pants, but apparently it is possible)... check the lost and found. If you think your children are far too conscientious to have left anything unattended, but have not actually seen their fleece coat recently... check the lost and found. If you are lonely or depressed with the state of your remaining wardrobe... check the lost and found. If you empathize with the plight of being misplaced... check the lost and found. In fact if you are reading this you fit the profile of someone who needs to check the lost and found. Clothes are donated twice a year to organizations like Listen to make room for the new season’s fashion.

Astounding Many people live here Exciting Really good I really like Colorful A lot of people - Hector, grade 5

Displacement: n The weight or volume of a fluid displaced by a object... the volume of the immersed object can then be deduced the volume of the immersed object will be exactly equal to the volume of the displaced fluid. (snore*) It is at this point when a teacher really begins to sound like every adult in a Peanuts cartoon. Fortunately, there is another way to understand concepts like displacement or volume. These methods encourage getting a real sense of the concept -- getting involved -- or as in the case of Mr. Pendleton’s class, inside, the topic. This week volunteers in the the eighth grade stepped inside a large, blue, plastic barrel filled with water (cold water I was told) to measure the displacement of their body. As cold as the water was at least this year the experiment was conducted inside. In a related story the classroom directly below them had the opportunity to observe rain patterns without leaving their seats (not really).

Double Activity The first round of double activity has concluded and it was a great success. Students grades 6-8 participated in activities such as: Orienteering, Research Exploratory, Outdoor Games, Climbing, Flexibility & Strength, Chair Painting, Mentoring (Students work with elementary classes), & Rockets (see right) This next session will include Photography, Floor Cloths, Knitting, Movement, Batik, and Rockets (is anyone surprised that this is repeated). We expect that this session of rockets will include guests visits from local rocketeer (not to be confused with a mousketeer), Mike Hinsley and yes, he is our fire chief and somehow I sleep just fine..

Inservice As you may recall last week the school held two inservice days. This time was devoted to emergency planning and response as well as continuing our work on articulating and aligning our curriculum to national performance standards. This effort is conducted throughout the year each Thursday. If you are interested and want to hear more, give me a call.
