Message from the Principal School Ethos

Hello again.

We at Maylands Peninsula Primary School are committed to:

Here we are at the end of our first term as an Independent Public School. Our new School Board has been working hard to develop our 2011-2013 Business Plan. When it is complete, a copy of this plan will be placed on our website at www.mpps.wa.edu.au.

Encouraging students to be successful learners. The principles of developmental learning. Life-long learning and reflective practices. Developing attitudes and values of care and concern for self, others and the environment. Main tain ing a safe environment for all. Building partnerships with students, parents and the community.

Upon their return in Term 2, our students in Years 3, 5 and 7 will be undertaking NAPLAN testing. The National Assessment Program–Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It has been an annual event for schools since 2008. On Tuesday 10, Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 May, students will undertake the 2011 NAPLAN tests. NAPLAN is made up of tests in the four domains of Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. NAPLAN assesses skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time, through the school curriculum. NAPLAN is not a pass or fail type test, but rather shows how individual students are progressing in numeracy and literacy skills against national standards for all Australian children. All students are encouraged to participate in the tests. Students with a disability may qualify for special provisions that reflect the support normally provided to them in the classroom. An individual student NAPLAN report will be issued by the school later this year. Parents can use this information to monitor how their child is progressing and to identify any areas of concern. Parents may also wish to use their child’s results to discuss progress with teachers. More information is available at www.naplan.edu.au

Coming Events Tuesday 19 April Anzac Assembly Last day of school

Wednesday 20 April— Wednesday 4 May School Holidays No School

Thursday May 5

Following our visit by Michael Barlow from the Fremantle Dockers last week, we were visited at this morning’s Student Council assembly by Mr Brendan Mc Faull from the AFL and Mr Peter Naylor from the Bayswater-Morley Junior Football Club. Mr Mc Faull presented the school with some footballs, an Aussie Rules Skills book for our Library and spoke with the students about the Auskick football program. Mr Naylor presented us with some more footballs and indicated that the Junior Football Club would present the school with a shield for the Citizen of the Year Award to be presented annually to the student who makes the greatest contribution to the school in the citizenship category. We will have more details about this early next term. We thank them both for their kind donation. A note is coming home today with this newsletter about the opportunity for your son or daughter to participate in a junior football program. Term 1 finishes on Tuesday April 19 at 2:30pm and students return to school Thursday May 5. Can I take the opportunity to wish all of our hardworking staff and students a restful and well earned term break?

Students return to school.

Fremantle Dockers Assembly Much to the delight of Mrs Johnson and Mrs Watt, Michael Barlow from the Fremantle Dockers came with Wade Spilcker to present the Senior students with a set of school football jumpers. The jumpers are in the school colours of dark blue with a light blue anchor. We are very grateful for their support. Michael also spoke about the importance of doing well at school and being healthy. As Michael has had to move from Victoria to Perth when he was drafted, he told the Year 7 students to make the most of the challenges they will face in Year 8 with open arms. Students had the opportunity to ask Michael some questions and he particularly liked the one about “How many medals have you won?”
