Why A Missions Conference? Tim Handyside // Elder over Missions

On October 27-29th, we will be hosting a Missions Conference. It has been a few years since we had one, so a couple natural questions you might have is, “Why do we need to have a conference and why should I get involved?” Both good questions that I believe have good answers. The short answer is that a missions conference helps remind and challenge us as church regarding our responsibility to be involved in taking the gospel both near and far (Acts 1:8). Without this reminder we can become lethargic in our responsibility to go, give, and pray for the expansion of the gospel message. Here are some other reasons for having and attending the conference: 1. As we hear from and interact with the missionaries we support, we learn how to pray for them better and how they are serving as an extension of our church. 2. As we go out on Saturday morning to serve, we put hands and feet to our theology and doctrine.

3. As we hear of what God is doing in other places, it reminds us that He is powerfully at work around the world and helps to pop our American bubble.

4. As we involve our children in getting to know our missionaries and serving their community, it assists them in gaining a greater understanding of the greatness of God as well as helps push them away from being self-centered. 5. As we spend time thinking about the broken and lost world around us, it convicts us to speak more about our Savior and the beautiful message of the gospel. Conference Schedule: Friday, 10/27, 6:30-8:30 // Missions Dinner: Hear from the McCauleys and interact with other missionaries. Saturday, 10/28, 8:30-12 // Serve Saturday: Get involved in various outreach avenues to our city. Sunday, 10/29, 9-12 // Missions Sunday: Hear a message on missions and spend time during equip with our missionaries and ministries. FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THESE EVENTS: visit ncc-stl.org

Every local church should be engaged with global missions, even if most individuals in the church aren't called to go overseas. But what does this engagement actually look like? How can local churches train, send, and support missionaries well? Unpacking principles from the Bible and applying them in the context of real life in a local church, this new book in the 9Marks: Building Healthy Churches series is filled with practical steps and advice for supporting missionaries, forming international partnerships, sending short-term teams, and engaging with the nations here at home. This book casts a vision for the local church as the engine of world missions—for the joy of all people and the glory of God.
