OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD SHOEBOX PROJECT Boxes Due Sunday, November 13. Commissioning & Prayer Sunday, November 20 Filled boxes can be returned to the FLOCK Sunday School room or the church office.

Chet’s Chat Dr. Chet Andrews Senior Pastor

American writer, William Arthur Ward once said, “Gratitude can transform common days into Thanksgiving, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings.” This a good word for a world that seems to be drowning in cynicism. Too often we hear only how bad things are and never consider the blessing we encounter every day. The unthankful heart is very closely aligned to worry and anxiety and having a mindset that expects things to go wrong. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus warns us about worry and how to change our focus in order to stop the anxiety and appreciate the blessings of our daily lives. Jesus says, “…See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:28-32). A worrisome, unthankful heart misses the small things in life like flowers, or a child laughing, or the kind gesture of someone allowing you to cut in front of them in traffic. The cure for the unthankful, worrisome heart is simply seeking Jesus first. When Christ is the focus and we see things through His eyes, ordinary days turn into extraordinary blessings. One of the biggest blessings we have in November is participating in Operation Christmas Child. The world’s largest Christmas project of its kind, Operation Christmas Child, uses gift-filled shoeboxes to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way to children in need around the world. For the past several years, the Flock Sunday School class has sponsored the shoe box ministry. The boxes will be available for the church family to pick up on October 30 and will need to be turned in by November 13. The boxes will be in four locations; the sanctuary vestibule, the BC door, the nursery door, and the office hallway. On Sunday, November 20, the boxes are on the front edge of the pulpit for the morning service and we will have a commissioning and pray over the boxes as they not only take gifts all around the world, but most importantly the Gospel as well! Last year the goal was 100 boxes, but this year we are truly stepping out in faith and asking for 150 boxes! Our family usually does 4 boxes and each of our children helps buy the items and pack the boxes. It is always a wonderful time of worship for our family. We pray over our boxes and ask God to allow the missionaries giving out the boxes to share the gospel clearly so those receiving the boxes will hopefully also reactive the greatest gift in the universe… JESUS!!!
