Truth Flowing from One Generation to the Next—Through Strong Heart Connections

PA R ENTS PAGE January 29-31, 2012 Living for God’s Glory—Richard Ross, Ph.D. 1. Heart Surprise (Today a teenager goes first): When it’s your turn, say: Even as an adult, I have enjoyed our family traditions. Another tradition I’ve always enjoyed has been . . . 2. Read Scripture: Invite a family member to pray. Ask family members to read Psalm 86:9-12. Discuss the Truth and Untruths in light of this passage. Truth • As a believer, my primary purpose for living is to glorify God. Untruths • Life is all about me. • There is no higher good than my happiness. • If God exists, He exists to meet my needs. 3. Explore Scripture: Read aloud Psalm 86:9-12. Tell the family that this psalm was written in poetic style. Say: If the phrases are placed in chronological rather than poetic order, they can be arranged like this: 1. By God’s grace and power, I live with an undivided (God-focused) heart. 2. Living this way brings glory to God. 3. Glorifying God leads more people and nations to glorify Him. Ask each family member to memorize and then repeat: As a believer, my primary purpose for living is to bring glory to God. 4. Think It Through: A teenager will lead this step. 5. Nail It Down: Direct family members to close their eyes. Ask them to reflect on these questions: • Most lost people believe they are the center of their world. Who serves as the center of your world? (Pause) • Most lost people live to find more happiness. Why do you live? (Pause) • Most lost people will get up tomorrow trying to get more for themselves. What will be your primary goal tomorrow? 6. Pray: A teenager will lead the prayer. 7. Blessing: Say: I bless family members who are living to bring glory and honor to God. Parent Tip: Several studies indicate that parental harmony contributes enormously to the emotional health of children, while marital conflict can have devastating effects. Parents who are warm, romantic, and appropriately affectionate in front of their children take a giant step toward raising kingdom kids.
