Mental and Behavioral Health Tips from the School Psychologist HOW TO GIVE INSTRUCTIONS SO YOUR STUDENTS/CHILDREN LISTEN TO YOU SOMETIMES WE HAVE STUDENTS/CHILDREN THAT HAVE A DIFFICULT TIME FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS. YOU MAY FIND YOURSELF REPEATING INSTRUCTIONS SEVERAL TIMES AND GIVING PROMPT AFTER PROMPT TO GET HIM/HER TO LISTEN TO YOU. BELOW ARE A FEW STRATEGIES THAT, OVER TIME, WILL HELP ENCOURAGE YOUR STUDENTS/CHILDREN TO LISTEN RIGHT AWAY, THE FIRST TIME. Tell rather than ask. If you ask your student/child to do something, it gives him/her the opportunity to say no. Instead, kindly tell your student/child what you want him/her to do.

Only give instructions you are willing and able to follow through with. To get to a point where your student/child follows your instructions consistently, it is important to make sure he/she completes each instruction you give. At first, this might mean giving fewer, easier instructions. Follow through. Make sure that you follow through if you give an instruction. You may ‘wait it out’ until the instruction is complete before moving on to the next scheduled activity or before using prompting.

Follow through with (wait out) clean up before moving on to free time.

Only give instructions one time. Repeating an instruction more than once might teach the student/child that he/she does not need to listen to you right away the first time, every time. Ideally, give the instruction once and follow through. Reinforce the behaviors you want to see. Make sure to praise your student/child when they do follow directions. Use specific praise such as, “I really like how you came to the dinner table right away!” If there is an instruction that your student/child really struggles to follow, be sure to schedule something fun right after completing the instruction. You shouldn’t offer to do something fun if they have said “no” or refused to do what you instructed them to do. Instead, be proactive and tell your student/child that when they finish the task, they will get to do something fun afterward (i.e., before they start to resist). The harder the task, the more fun the activity should be. Remember the student/child does not get to do the fun activity until they have done what you have asked them to do first!

“After you have cleaned your room, we will play a game.”

Preschool News Numbers, nuts, nests, and New YearThis week we have been learning about the letter Nn! We had fun playing number bingo, playing with some new toys, and learning how mother and father birds build nests. We also practiced putting nuts and bolts together! Next week we will be learning about the letter O- maybe we will find our friend, Olaf, learn about owls, and all the creatures in the ocean! I’m sure we all wish we were there in person during this cold time of the year!

th th th WELCOMEBACK! Happy to see the kids back at school. It’s fun getting back in a routine and working with the students. There will be our third iXLchallenge this quarter. The student who masters the most iXLskills for the quarter will win a little prize. The students will be taking their last MAPStest for the year starting on Monday and everyone will be completed by the 26th of January. In Math, the students may use a scratch sheet of notebook paper to complete their assignments if they would like. This is perfectly okay and may be done every day or on occasion if they like lines or need more space than on the worksheet I provide. After every 5 lessons the 4-6th graders will be having a test (after lesson 10, 15, 20, etc) As the students continue on through their textbook and get to a problemthey do not know, they can look at the small number in parenthesis underneath the problemnumber. This small number tells themthe lesson in which the problemcame fromand will have examples and howto solve the problemin those examples. This is a great tool for themto use. Parents can at any time look over students’ homework and identify mistakes and have the student correct those mistakes before class the next day. This is an awesome way for kids to learn. Mrs. Liakos – 6th Grade Homeroom 4th, 5th, and 6th Grade Social Studies

4th Grade – We have begun Chapter 9, which is all about the changes in the Native American’s lives after the Homestead Act and statehood. This includes reservation life and how difficult the change was for them. 5th Grade– We finished Unit 7 and have begun Unit 8 which is about the Civil War. We are learning about the causes leading up to the war and finding out what the economy of the South was based on as compared to the economy of the North. 6th Grade– We are studying about the time period right before World War I. We are learning about more democracies starting in Western Europe, the 2 nd Industrial Revolution and the changes that brought about, and the women’s right movements around the world. 6TH Language Arts – Our main reading story this week was “Any Small Goodness”, which was about a former NBA player who volunteers as a coach in a barrio school district. This story sparked conversations about how important volunteers are, even in our own community. For grammar, we covered active and passive voice, using be and have, and subject-verb agreement. For spelling we had word parts com- and con-. 6th Guided Reading – The groups are reading Tangerine Dark Life, Malcolm X and Mockingjay.
