The Evolution of Machine Embroidery February is National Embroidery Month. This is a month where we get to recognize both the hand embroiders and machine embroiders alike. Forms of embroidery have been around for thousands of years. It is amazing when you look back how much the invention of “one” new tool can totally change an art form. For embroidery the discovery of hand shuttle during the Industrial Revolution revolutionilized the art form and spurred a chain of events that led us to the machines we use today. In the 1800s, Joshua Heilmann worked on improving the design of a hand embroidery machine. This resulted in a huge chain of events leading to the developement of sewing machines in the 1860s, and then, to the invention of the hand powered embroidery looms in the 1870s. In 1990 PFAFF introduced the first home embroidery machine with the launch of the 7500 Machine Series. These machines featured a 4” x 4” embroidery space and had to be hooked to your windows PC with special software to transfer and stitchout different designs. As the popularity of Machine Embroidery grew quilters wanted to be able to stitch out larger designs. In 2007 PFAFF debuted the Creative Vision. This amazing machine featured a 14” x 14” embroidery space and the ability to transfer designs with a USB stick. With the Launch of the PFAFF Creative Sensation Pro in 2013, PFAFF is continuing to revolutionize the art of machine embroidery. The large graphic screen allows you to create embroidery design right on your machine without a computer. The ActivStitch Technology makes embroidering with any type of thread, even metallic, a breeze. The machine meters out the thread stitch by stitch, giving you perfect results every time. It is amazing to see how much it has changed in the last 10 years and exciting to see how much more it will change in the upcoming years.
