Photograph Poem You will write a poem based on a photograph. The photograph can be one you bring in from home (your family, friends, vacation, special occasion, etc.). Or, you can use one of the laminated pictures I have in the basket. Either way, choose a photograph that is meaningful or that interests you. See the other side of this sheet for a sample of a photo poem written by a student. Before you begin, pre-write by answering some questions about your photo. 1. Why did you choose this particular picture?

2. Make a list of everything that appears in your photograph.

3. Consider what is NOT in the frame of the photo. For example, who took this picture? What may have been going on behind the scenes?

4. Think about point of view. Do you want your poem to take a third person point of view? Do you want to write from a first person perspective? You may even want to take the point of view of an object in the photo (as in the sample poem on back).

5. Don’t forget to use Poetic Devices! Write a simile, metaphor, onomatopoeia, personification, hyperbole, rhyming couplet, or other poetic device that you can use in your poem:

Cloud I am a cloud Floating above the earth Waiting for a puff of air, To push me along, To a new place. I look down And see the little people And cars and buildings It looks like a child’s Toy town. I eventually float down Letting people walk in me. It tickles, Like a flower Brushing against your cheek. I go up high And become sad For clouds don’t keep friends They go where the wind blows them And have no choice about it. I get so sad I open up And let out my tears But you just call it rain Sometimes I get mad When the world takes me To a mean place Or there are too many pollutants in me Then I just rage Sprouting lightening And thunder And if it is cold enough And I am mad enough I produce hail Pelting things in my fury. But usually I float Drifting lazily around. Waiting for the next Sunrise to come.
