Upcoming Events 2016 

February 29: Leap into Membership.

April 12: Continuing Education Program and new

This November I had the privilege of representing the Pi Kappa chapter at the STTI Biennial Convention. The convention took place in Las Vegas, Nevada. Although the venue was in a fun location, there certainly was a lot of fun inside the convention center. There were over 1100 first-time attendees. In keeping with the STTI mission, “Advancing world health and celebrating nursing excellence in scholarship, leadership and service,” there were many opportunities to network on a variety of topics. Dr. Hester Klopper, President of STTI provided the opening plenary session. The theme was based upon Dr. Klopper’s Call to Action to Serve Locally, Transform Regionally, Lead Globally. STTI has grown internationally by representing 500 chapters from 98 countries and opening offices across the globe. She spoke of the importance of being on the cutting edge of healthcare in order to keep up with the evolving health, education, and practice issues. One way to stay cutting edge is to become involved at the local level by attending meetings and events. Please make plans to attend our Leap into Pi Kappa event February 29 (see p. 2 for details). This is a great way to meet other members and become actively involved in your chapter. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, [email protected].

STTI Biennial Convention an “Amazing” Experience By Cristina Ortiz, Pi Kappa President Attending the 43rd Biennial Convention was an amazing personal and professional experience. As you can imagine with over 1000 oral and poster presentations there was a wide variety of topics. I attended sessions related to chapter policies, practice issues, and educational topics. I had the opportunity to network with members who had similar interests and faced similar practice challenges. But perhaps the most interesting experience was serving as a member of the House of Delegates. Prior to the convention I had received the biographical information for all candidates and the proposed bylaws changes. I spent much time becoming familiar with these changes, as I wanted to be able to make a choice that would greatly benefit the profession and our local chapter. The House of Delegates process was very formal, and provided an avenue for individuals to exchange varied points of view. One of the amendments passed removed the responsibility of Electronic House of Delegate voting for new and revoked chapters. Additionally, the Chapter Model Amendment provides an innovative chapter model whereby practice settings may become an academicpractice at-large chapter. The intent of this bylaw amendment is to accelerate the mission and vision of STTI, which may lead to additional crosscollaboration between the academic and practice setting. I encourage you to become involved with the Pi Kappa chapter so that you too may have the opportunity to collaborate with other nursing professionals from varied specialties, locally and at the international level.

Pi Kappa Service News Rotary Box Project Pi Kappa participated in the Rotary Shoe Box project in September, 2015. Two shoe boxes, one for an 8-year-old girl and one for an 8-year-old boy, were provided by the Waterloo Rotary Club. Pi Kappa board members filled the boxes with basic necessities and school supplies to be distributed to impoverished Nicaraguan children. Pi Kappa’s contribution to the shoebox project is part of the college-wide effort that occurs every fall. Rotary club representatives transport the shoe boxes to Nicaragua for distribution to more than 2,400 children.

Coat and Blanket Drive For the second year in a row, Pi Kappa partnered with the Allen Student Nurses Association (ASNA) in the annual Salvation Army Coat and Blanket Drive. From September 28 through October 12, collection boxes were set up throughout the college for donations of coats, hats, gloves, scarves, and blankets. On October 7 five Pi Kappa members and 28 ASNA members worked together to make 21 fleece blankets that were later donated to the Salvation Army. See blanketmaking photos in this newsletter. The purpose of the coat and blanket drive was to supply the Salvation Army with coats and blankets for distribution to community members in need.

Flo’s Joe Flo’s Joe has become an annual December finalsweek tradition at Allen College. Pi Kappa coordinates a snack and beverage bar for Allen College students in all programs to facilitate their success on end-of-semester exams. Allen College faculty and associates contribute food for Flo’s Joe, named in honor of Florence Nightingale, who was involved in opening coffee house-reading rooms for workers who were on their way home from their shifts in the 1880s. Nightingale provided the workers with coffee and free reading materials. Members of Pi Kappa started the Flo’s Joe tradition in December of 2010. Pi Kappa thanks its Board members for coordinating this annual event in service to Allen College students. Thanks are also due to Allen College faculty, associates, and Pi Kappa members for supplying beverages and treats for Flo’s Joe.

Pi Kappa in 17th Year as a Sigma Theta Tau International Chapter

PAGE 9

Pi Kappa Board Members 2015-2016

The year 2016 marks the 17th anniversary of the Pi Kappa Chapter’s charter with Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI). It is no small feat to become an STTI chapter. Several dedicated Allen College leaders worked for several years to lay the groundwork for the charter application.

Cristina Ortiz President [email protected]

It all began on May 15, 1996, when Dr. Kathryn Schweer, who at the time was Dean of Academic Affairs at Allen College, convened a small group of people interested in establishing a chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International at Allen College. The guidelines for establishing a chapter were reviewed, and the group decided to become a Steering Committee for the Allen College Nursing Honor Society (ACNHS).

Sarah Steele Vice President [email protected]

Since its inception, the ACNHS has held 18 induction ceremonies, inducting 770 qualified nursing students, faculty, and nurse leaders. The ACNHS completed the work necessary for submission of charter application in September 1998. The application was followed by an evaluation visit by Dr. Ruth Marcott from STTI in April 1999. Following Dr. Marcott’s visit and recommendation, the ACNHS was approved by the STTI Board of Directors to present a petition for charter to the House of Delegates. The petition for charter was approved by the House of Delegates at the STTI Biennial Convention November 6-10, 1999. The petition was presented by Mary Thoms, President, and Mary Brown, President-Elect. The ACNHS was officially chartered as Pi Kappa #392 Chapter, STTI on March 27, 2000.
