Nearly ninety years ago, in December, 1925, USC Assist ant Athletic Director Gwynn Wilson and his wife traveled to Nebraska to meet the immortal Knute Rockne about a series between the Trojans and Notre Dame. USC’s legendary Howard “Headman” Jones wanted to play Notre Dame because he felt such a game would give the Trojans the national exposure they were seeking. Rockne and Wilson met after the Notre Dame/Nebraska game, Rockne declining Mr. Wilson’s suggested series because Rockne and the Irish were tired of traveling and wanted to stay closer to home. Subsequent to the meeting with Rockne, Mr. Wilson and his wife, Marion, traveled with the Notre Dame team on the train to Chicago. During that trip, Mrs. Wilson talked to Bonnie Rockne about “how nice” Southern California was, how they “put fruit baskets in the hotel,” and what a pleasant trip it would be for all concerned. Mrs. Rockne then told her husband that Notre Dame ought to agree to the game. Rockne—at his wife’s suggestion—did agree and Wilson sent a telegram back to USC stating: “The Game Is On!” Rockne and the Fighting Irish (then, also known as the “Ramblers” because of their extensive travel playin g games all over the country) first traveled to the West Coast to play on December 4, 1926, the Southern California Trojans.
