Poker Lake Ranch

The Poker Lake Ranch is located on the northern slope of the Capitan Mountain in south-central New Mexico all within historic Lincoln County. The ranch is easily accessible from New Mexico Highway 246 approximately fifty minutes from Ruidoso, New Mexico. Ruidoso is a resort community that offers summer and winter recreational opportunities. The Sierra Blanca Regional Airport, which can accommodate most any size of private jet, is forty minutes from the ranch. The ranch is comprised of 12,396 Deeded Acres, 180 New Mexico State Lease Acres and 120 federal Bureau of Land Management Lease acres. The grazing capacity is owner controlled and estimated by New Mexico State University to be approximately 290 Animal Units Yearlong with normal precipitation. Ownership estimates the grazing capacity between 300 and 400 animal units on a yearlong basis. The Poker Lake Ranch offers a variety of uses that include year around livestock production and big game hunting. The ranch lies in two noncontiguous tracts divided by New Mexico Highway 246. The largest portion of the ranch is located north of the highway comprised of approximately 10,000 contiguous acres. The owner’s residence is located south of the highway with excellent access. In addition to the residence the south side is partitioned into three small pastures and one small holding trap in the vicinity of the residence. This portion of the ranch offers breathtaking scenery being located at the base of the Capitan Mountain. Kyle Harrison and the Arroyo Seco Canyons offer intermittent running water with Ponderosa Pine, cedar and juniper tree cover that provide for excellent elk and mule deer habitat.

The terrain is gently rolling with numerous natural playa lakes scattered throughout this area of the ranch that catch and store rainfall runoff for utilization by livestock and wildlife. The northern portion of the ranch is partitioned into 10 larger pastures and several small holding traps. The Lowrey Camp, located in the north central portion of the ranch, offers the improvement infrastructure to operate this area of the ranch. The improvements are comprised of a residence, barn and working corrals.

Permanent water is provided by three subsurface wells located within the boundary of the ranch and one partnership well with the adjoining ranch to the east. Associated with the wells is an extensive buried water pipeline system that extends for approximately fifteen miles and provides water to locations of the ranch that otherwise would not have a permanent source of water. The water system is improved with seven water storage tanks and seventeen water troughs. The natural lakes also provide an excellent source of water when there is adequate rainfall. This ranch offers good access, excellent cattle grazing, big game hunting and numerous other recreational activities.
