#28 • Starting pitcher • so. Micah Beyer gets his second start of the season this Friday afternoon. A week ago he was stellar in a start against Antelope Valley. He went seven innings, struck out six and allowed just four hits and one earned run before Buddy Brouwer came in and shut the door on the Pioneers over the final two innings.

Biola Baseball used its big bats and a handful of stellar starting pitching performances to get out to a 3-0 start to the season last week. Unfortunately, the bats began to quiet down later in the week as the Eagles lost their next two games and even got shutout in one of them. This non-conference series against Vanguard will be a challenging one for Head Coach Jay Sullenger’s team unless they get the offense back on track here at Eagles Diamond. That will be a tall task against a Vanguard pitching staff that has a 1.47 combined ERA through its first five games of the 2016 season. The Lions also come into this series looking to right the ship after a recent loss. Vanguard started the year with four January victories, but a loss to Redlands leaves it at 0-1 so far in February. In all four of the Vanguard victories the team scored six runs or more, including a 10-6 victory over Marymount University on Jan. 30. The Lions’ offense has been dominated by doubles-hitters. The team has just two homeruns to this point of the year, but it is in the top-5 in the nation with its 13 doubles. The stolen base has also been a big tool in Head Coach Rob Pegg’s bag of tricks. The Lions have 15 steals on 16 attempts through five games. They’ll need to look out if they attempt to run on Sam Thorne though, as the Eagles’ veteran catcher has thrown out five of the seven runners attepting a steal against him in 2016. Andres Rodriguez continued his hot start to the season last weekend and in this week’s midweek loss at CSU San Marcos. He’s currently hitting .412 with two runs scored, an RBI and three multi-hit game. Look for Sullenger to potentially move him around in the batting order a bit to take advantage of his knack for making contact to drive in some runs in this series. Jose Rojas (#11) is currently Vanguard’s leading hitter with a .556 batting average through the first five outings. He’s got 10 hits in 18 at-bats and has been ultra-effective as five of those 10 hits have gone for extra bases. The senior shortstop has one of the Lions’ two homeruns, has scored six times and is second on the team with seven RBI. He’s also a threat on the base paths with four steals. Vanguard is likely to trot out Sean Isaac, Ryan Heinle and Tyler Steele over the course of the three-game set. That trio is 3-0 with just one earned run against them in a combined 17 innings so far this season. Countering them will be Micah Beyer, Jimmy Gallarda and Eric Diomartich. Biola’s trio combines for a 2-0 mark and 20 total innings of work. Gallarda is the No. 2 starter and leads the way with eight innings pitched, three Ks and just one run allowed.Biola went 2-4 against Vanguard in 2015. The two teams meet once in GSAC play in late-April.
