The first step to becoming present is acknowledgement. It’s important to recognize where your thoughts are throughout the day. We know it’s impossible to be completely focused on the now all the time. However, taking a quick inventory of where your thoughts are, and the effect they’re having on your mood, are essential to help you grow. Ask yourself questions such as:
What am I focused on? Should I be? If not, where did those thoughts come from? Is it something I need to take care of now or can it wait?
This sounds so simple but often times it’s not. Our minds are tracking thousands of things every second, most of them subconsciously. It’s no wonder random thoughts creep into our focus. It’s critically important to understand how this simple acknowledgement of your thoughts can be. In our opinion, it’s one of the most important ‘wins’ you can have on any given day.
