J.W. Alvey School Counseling Program Fourth Grade Large Group Counseling Lesson – BULLYING PREVENTION AND INTERVENTION: RECOGNIZE, REPORT, REFUSE

The Recognize, Report, Refuse large group counseling lesson (1) was taught as part of a unit to 5 fourth grade classes in order to decrease the number of fourth grade discipline referrals. Students participated in this lesson during the fall of 2016. The lesson was presented by Anne Henry and Pam Freybler, school counselors. RESULTS (process and perception):
126 students (5 classes of 4th grade students) participated in this lesson. 93% (117 out of 126) of 4th Grade students answered the first bullying identification question correctly. 96% (121 out of 126) of 4th Grade students answered the second bullying identification question correctly. 88% (22 out of 25 groups) of 4th Grade students successfully completed the bullying reporting reflection sheet (all 3 short answer questions about reporting correct).
IMPACT (outcome):
4th Grade students reduced their number of discipline referrals by 70%.
PROGRAM IMPLICATIONS:
Continue delivering lesson on recognizing, reporting, and refusing bullying, as well as other lessons in the 4 th grade bullying prevention and intervention unit. Consider delivering an additional lesson that explores more options for conflict resolution. The school counselors will share this information with the Counseling Advisory Committee and stakeholders.
