The Professional Golf Management Program at California University of Pennsylvania is dedicated to educating the future leaders of the golf industry. Our mission — providing a wellrounded academic structure for a professional golf management education — ensures this reality is achieved. Specifically, graduates have the hands-on experience and conceptual skills necessary to manage business operations in the golf industry. In addition, students will gain an appreciation of the importance of ethical standards of conduct throughout all aspects of their lives.

Angle of approach

The four-and-one-half year Professional Golf Management (PGM) program is a structured undergraduate educational offering by California University of Pennsylvania. PGM provides students with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for success in the golf industry through extensive classroom instruction and internship programs.

Where will your degree take you?

S

tudents attending the PGM program at California University will graduate with a baccalaureate degree in Sport Management Studies, with a concentration in Professional Golf Management and a minor in Business Administration from the Department of Exercise Science and Sport Studies. Traditional career opportunities include director of golf, head golf professional, director of instruction and teaching professional.

State-of-the-art PGM Student Training Analysis and Research (STAR) Academy for practice and the Player Development Program. The facility includes a 1,200 square foot putting/chipping green and six hitting cages. Assorted training aids including the Explanar (Professional Training System), AboutGolf Swing Simulator, V-1 Professional Swing Analysis Software, Accusport Vector Pro Launch Monitor, K-Vest TPI 3D Swing Analyzer, Science and Motion Sports (SAM) PuttLab and BalanceLab.

Dedicated golf club fitting and repair laboratory with eight golf club assembly and repair stations.

Classroom/laboratory space for 40 PGM students to learn management systems for all aspects of the golf business, including computers equipped with software geared to tournament management, point of sale, inventory control, profit loss analysis, etc. The PGM Golf Fitness and Conditioning Center — staffed by an American Council on Exercise-Certified Group Fitness Instructor/Titlist Performance Institute-Certified Golf Fitness Instructor — with golf-specific training aids to improve balance, flexibility, stability and strength.

Tee off Cedarbrook Golf Course is the “home course” of the Cal PGM program. Located just 15 minutes from campus, Cedarbrook features two 18-hole championship golf courses, a full practice range, numerous practice putting and chipping greens, turfgrass operations, a full service PGA model golf shop and a restaurant. PGM students also have access to Nemacolin Country Club, a 18-hole private country club located eight miles south of the University, and the Monongahela Valley Country Club, a private nine-hole course with a practice area for additional play and practice opportunities.

A solid stance

Passing the test Successfully completing the Playing Ability Test (PAT) is one of the first steps in becoming a PGA Professional. The PAT is conducted from the middle tees of the golf course with the flagsticks set on a generally flat area of the green. One of the following must be completed within two years of registering in the PGM program: n

Pass the 36-hole PAT by scoring equal to or less than the PAT target score, which is determined by multiplying the USGA course rating by two and adding 15 strokes.

Attempt the PAT at least once within two years and shoot one 18-hole score that is equal to or less than the PAT target score for 18 holes plus 5 strokes.

The Department of Exercise Science and Sport Studies (ESSS) is located on the campus of California University of Pennsylvania. The University is one of 14 institutions that make up the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE). In addition to the PGM program, the department has Bachelor’s degree programs in sport management, sport management wellness and fitness track; a Master of Science in exercise science and health promotion with four tracks: wellness and fitness, rehabilitation science, sport psychology, and performance enhancement and injury prevention; and a Master of Science in sport management. ESSS comprises more than 20 faculty who have a wide variety of expertise in their respective fields of study, with more than half holding earned doctorates in their discipline.
