4-H Youth Development Program 

A 4-H Intermediate Archery program allowed 8 youth the opportunity to learn the basics of using a pin sight on either recurve or compound bows. Pin sights are the most basic sighting system to use with bows. The program was hosted by Dunham’s Bay Fish & Game program and included a review of basic archery safety and shooting form.

The 4-H program offered the first official Wildlife Habitat Education Program (WHEP) event on mammals of the Adirondacks. Nine youth learned about common mammals of the local region and what habitats each species lives in. The program used a basic skill-a-thon format, where partnered youth rotated station to station to identify skulls, pelts, and other body parts. Two youth have since stated they would be interested in attending the NYS and National WHEP events.

North Warren Adventure Games were held mid-month and included a team challenge that required discussion and extensive cooperation. The marble track requires youth to use random pieces of PVC to build a track and move a marble from point A to point B, without carrying the marble in a single piece and the marble must contact every piece of PVC.

The Horse Club met at the Education Center at the end of the month to start work on a club banner to be used in parades and at the Fair. The banner will feature a piece featuring a cloth horse. The program was facilitated by 4-H volunteer, Janice Wakeley, with support from the staff. Thank you Janice.

Spartan Strong and North Warren Choose health programs continue to meet almost twice weekly. These programs have now spun interest in requests for additional programs both at Queensbury and North Warren.

The program has made arrangement with Chef Matt Bolton to host our new Produced in New York at SUNY ACC. There will be three separate programs, each featuring different aspects of food safety, cooking, and presentation.

Agriculture and Natural Resources Report on Master Gardener Volunteer activities: 

The number of consumer horticulture questions, including calls and visits to the office, have been minimal. Although the snow cover and consistently frigid temperatures have kept most of us indoors, there have been some questions with regard to indoor plants and household pests.

The orientation meeting for the new Master Gardener Volunteer Training Program was held at the CCE office on Monday, January 12, 2015. There are 12 people from Warren County attending the training classes in Ballston Spa. Several current Master Gardeners also attended the January 12th meeting and answered questions from the ‘new recruits’ about the Master Gardener program and also provided information about their experiences as Master Gardener Volunteers.

An informative WEBINAR on ‘Cabbageworm Management’ was presented by Jake Asplund from Washington State University, and Doug O’Brien, Adjunct Professor at Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz, CA. Jake Asplund is a Ph.D. student in Entomology, and Doug O’Brien is a researcher and teaches classes in organic farming. The webinar was attended by Julie Nathanson and the Master Gardener Volunteers were encouraged to view this important webinar.

The January Master Gardener Meeting was a plant potting-up activity with the residents of Countryside Adult Home. Lots of plants, pots, and soil were used to make some new and hardy pots of house plants for the residents. There was a large turnout of Master Gardener Volunteers for this MG meeting which I’m sure was appreciated by everyone at Countryside! (Continued on back page)
