PROGRAM UPDATE A publication of Cornell University Cooperative Extension - Warren County

October 2014

Family and Consumer Sciences A Parenting Apart program was held this month for parents who are experiencing a separation, divorce or break up of a relationship with a child involved. The program is part of the New York State Parent Education and Awareness Program which is designed to educate divorcing or separating parents about the impact of their breakup on their children. The primary goal is to teach parents ways they can reduce the stress of family changes and protect their children from the negative effects of ongoing parental conflict in order to foster and promote their children’s healthy adjustment and development. In addition to court orders and referrals, parents can self-refer and agencies can refer them. For more information about the Parenting Apart program, please contact Roxanne Westcott at [email protected] or 668-4881. Our energy budget comprises one of the biggest pieces of our overall budget, especially in the winter months. Two Save Energy, Save $ programs were held this month as part of the New York State Energy Resource Development Authority partnership with Cornell University and Cooperative Extension. Participants in the one-hour program learned how to reduce energy costs through low-cost/no-cost tips and practices. Resources and energy assistance programs were also discussed. Families are busier now more than ever and challenges abound when it comes to serving up a hot, healthy meal at the end of the day. An “Express Lane Meals” program was held this month for members of CDPHP. Ten ingredients or less dishes were prepared using local, fresh ingredients and standard pantry items. Participants enjoyed cooking a squash-apple soup, creamy chicken casserole and two-ingredient pumpkin muffins.

4-H Youth Development Program The 4-H staff was joined by several adult volunteers and ten youth during the Flapjack Fundraiser at Applebee’s Restaurant in Queensbury. The youth seated participants, waited tables, prepared cold items like drinks, and served meals. The adults assisted by working with hot foods and preparing hot drinks. This event raised over $500.00. Tractor Supply Company, a national partner with 4-H, once again held a Paper Clover fundraiser during the National 4-H Week. The brand new Nature Club actively participated in the fundraiser by having members of their club there to assist with bagging on October 11. They were joined by staff member, Dan Carusone. A Basic 4-H Archery program was held at the Dunham’s Bay Fish & Game Club. The event provided knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience in eye dominance, archery stance, anchoring an arrow, and shooting fundamentals. Basic STEM skills related to arrow flight, potential, and kinetic energy were also reviewed. Eight youth between the age of 8 and 14 participated in the event and used both recurve and compound bows. The last Environmental Field Day of the year was held on October 1 at Pack Demonstration Forest and included presentations by Soil & Water, DEC Forest Rangers, Land & Minerals, and Forestry, as well as Public Health. The 4-H Adirondack Guides had their fall testing program at 4th Lake Campground the first weekend of October. While it was cold and rainy, youth stayed positive and upbeat and ten youth tested into their respective levels. There are still six youth to complete testing and make up dates are starting to be arranged. Tree ID gets much harder without leaves! The newly formed Nature Club had a 4-H Window Display at the Sullivan’s Corner store in Olmstedville and has picked up a total of 18 members. They have also picked up a new co-leader to assist with programming efforts. A second club is under formation in Stony Creek with a former club leader coming back and being retrained for current risk management issues.

Agriculture and Natural Resources The volume of consumer horticulture questions and calls and visits to the CCE office has slowed but gardening questions are still coming in on a daily basis. Many Master Gardener Volunteers are still working at their respective community garden sites each week. As an example, Diane Collins and Kathy Lion are still assisting by planting garlic and doing fall cutting back at the East Side Center (ESC) Gardens in Glens Falls. They were invited to the ‘end-of-the-growing season ‘ dinner for the people who are associated with the Warren-Washington Association for Mental Health and the E. Side Center Gardens. Kathy said many of the ingredients for the dinner dishes, such as tomatoes, basil, and eggplant, were planted, maintained, and harvested by the E. Side Center volunteers and by CCE Master Gardener Volunteers. Cliff Green, who coordinates the ESC Gardens, is a major player in the garden’s vibrancy and the hard work done in the gardens. The dinner was well attended again this year!

The October Master Gardener meeting was a ‘Meeting and a Movie.’ The movie ‘Fresh’ was an educational documentary about efforts being made to renovate the way we grow our food and treat livestock. It was a look at the harsh cycle of our food production methods and also a celebration of the farmers who have chosen to take the difficult but responsible road to sustainable farming. The meeting was very well attended! Many Master Gardener Volunteers attended the 2014 CCE Annual Meeting and Volunteer Recognition Dinner. Several Master Gardeners earned the CCE Master Gardener Volunteer Certificates this year, including Donald Towers, a new Master Gardener Volunteer who earned—and exceeded!—the required 80 hours in only six months. Well done Donald—and many thanks! The letters and applications for the new 2015 CCE Master Gardener Volunteer Training program were e-mailed and mailed out. We are hoping for a good response again this year.
