SOUTHWESTERN vs. OUACHITA: THE SERIES The series with Southwestern began in 1988, with a 17-6 Ouachita victory in Weatherford, Okla. The Tigers lead the all-time series, 8-3. Ouachita is a perfect 4-0 versus the Bulldogs since joining the Great American Conference. The Tigers have outscored SWOSU 166-85 in those games. All-time, the Tigers have outscored the Bulldogs 285-165. In the 11 games, Ouachita’s offense has averaged 25.9 points per game. The Tigers defense has allowed an average of 11 points per game. All three of SOWSU’s victories in the series have come at home in Weatherford. Those three wins were won by an average margin of 4.3 points. The 54 points scored by Ouachita in the 2014 game at Cliff Harris Stadium is the highest total scored by either team in the series. 20 of those points were scored on returns by the Tiger defense. Ouachita’s defense has held SOWSU to 14 or fewer points in seven of the 11 games played between the two teams. SOUTHWESTERN vs. OUACHITA: 2014 RECAP ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – A season-high homecoming crowd of 3,382 watched the Ouachita Tiger defense force six turnovers and return three for touchdowns in route to 54-21 win over Southwestern Oklahoma State. Defensive end Kyle Lamothe returned two fumbles for touchdowns, and AJ Burton returned a fourth-quarter interception 70 yards for six. Matt Ehasz got the Tigers on the board early in the first quarter, connecting on a 36-yard field goal to give Ouachita a 3-0 lead. The Bulldogs of Southwestern would answer on the ensuing drive, scoring on a one-yard run by Karl Hodge to give Southwestern their only lead of the day, 7-3.

On its next possession, Ouachita quarterback Kiehl Frazier would hit running Brandon Marks on a throw-back, and Marks would take it 32 yards for the score to give Ouachita a 10-7 lead. With 1:37 left in the first quarter, Tigers linebacker Jordan Harold forced a fumble on the Southwestern 20 yard line. Kyle Lamothe scooped the ball up and ran it back 20 yards to give Ouachita a 17-7 lead. After exchanging possessions in the second quarter, Ouachita added three more to their lead on another 36yard field goal by Ehasz. With 49 second left in the half, Ouachita’s Eric Ashburn would recover a fumbled punt on the Southwestern 16 yard line. On a first and goal, Kiehl Frazier connected with Evian Hill for the touchdown with 19 seconds left in the half. On the first play of the SWOSU drive, Ouachita’s Barkley Legens forced a fumble. Lamothe returned it for his second touchdown of the game, and the Tigers led 33-7 at halftime. Ouachita forced a Bulldog three-and-out to start the second half. Ouachita put together a nine play, 52-yard drive capped off by a one-yard dive by Frazier. Both offenses would stall for most of the third quarter, exchanging punts. The third quarter would end with a sack of Bulldog quarterback Klark Ashmore by Demetric Jennings. Tiger returner and cornerback Etauj Allen started off the fourth quarter with a 36-yard punt return to give the Tigers a first-and-goal on the SWOSU four yard line. Running back Steven Kehner would plow it in from on the first play and give Ouachita the 47-7 lead. Southwestern would start their next possession on its 34 yard line. The Bulldogs drove the ball down to the Tiger 35. On a second and seven, AJ Burton jumped the route on an Ashmore pass and returned it 70 yards for the score. Ouachita would give up two late scores on passes from Ashmore to receivers Teverick Boyd and Brian Robinson. Ouachita would win by a final score of 54-21.

TODD KNIGHT

After 16 seasons as head coach at Ouachita, Todd Knight is the longest standing college head football coach in Arkansas. He has proven to be a strong leader as he heads the Ouachita program with integrity and passion. Knight has guided the Tiger program through the infant stages of NCAA Division II, from the Lone Star Conference, the Gulf South Conference and now the Great American Conference. Steady improvement began in 2002 and 2003 which marked solid squads that would help build the future of Ouachita football. In the inaugural 2011 campaign, Knight led the Tigers to their first ever Great American Conference championship, the first conference championship for the Tigers in over 20 years. The longest tenured coach in the GAC and the Tigers claimed the conference championship once again in 2014, and Knight was named GAC Coach of the Year in both championship seasons. Knight was also named 2014 AFCA Region Three Coach of the Year. Knight has established Ouachita as an elite program among all Division II institutions. He boasts Great American Conference Championships in 2011 and 2014 and 56 All-Great American Conference players in just four years. The team is the only program in the state of Arkansas to boast seven consecutive winning seasons, cracking the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 in six of seven of those seasons. The team has been ranked as high as seventh in the AFCA poll, and Ouachita finished the 2014 season ranked 10th in all of Division II. Knight leads both on and off the field, and his players have been recognized for being outstanding achievers on the field, in the classroom and in the community. He has recruited and coached six professional football players, 133 All-Conference players, 20 All-Americans, three Honorable Mention All-Americans, 30 Academic All-Conference players and many GSC honor roll athletes. During the 2014 season, the Tigers finished the regular season 10-0 for the first time in program history. After winning the its second GAC championship, Ouachita earned the top seed in the region for the Tigers’ first ever appearance in the NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament. The Tigers finished the year with one Academic All-American, two All-Americans, six All-Region selections and 18 All-Conference selections. Ouachita also had a player named to the 2014 AFCA Allstate Good Works Team. Knight’s seniors have had a 90% graduation rate and the team has been involved in service to the community for many years. He has been quoted in saying that one of the most gratifying things in coaching is watching his players grow into the total man during their time at Ouachita, graduate and go on to be successful in all aspects of life. Knight’s development at head coach has come under solid leadership, playing under coach Buddy Benson at Ouachita, and later coaching under Red Parker and Don Skelton at Delta State from 1986-1989 and David Lee at the University of Texas at El Paso from 1990-1992. When he returned to Delta State as head coach from 1993-1998, he led the team to its first ever GSC Championship in 1998, also earning GSC Coach of the Year honors that year. Knight was named to the AFCA Board of Trustees following the conclusion of the 2012 football season, adding to his list of accolades. He also served on the NCAA Rules Committee, helping to make changes and restructure the rules for the game of college football along with coaches from around the country.
