Rag Quilt with Wanda Classen

The Rag Quilt is a perfect project for sewers of any skill level and owners of any make and model of machine. Whether you are new to quilting, or have quilted for many years, the end result is a cuddly quilt that you can keep for yourself or give as a gift. While you are making your quilt, you will learn how to:    

Create ½” seams easily using the presser feet that came with your machine. Sew bulky seams. Quilt as you go. Create a ‘fringed’ look.

This method leaves raw edges on the top side of the quilt. When completed, each raw edge will have a nice soft feel to it. You can leave your blocks plain, or, you can decorate your blocks. Appliqué designs and decorative stitches would be a great way to decorate your blocks.

Supplies:      

1 ½ yards of 5 flannel fabrics (total 7 ½). You can also use scraps of flannel. Approximately 4 yards of warm and natural batting. This is a good quilt to use scraps of batting. Cotton thread to coordinate with fabric. Sewing Machine (for second session) Cutting materials: quilter’s edge, rotary cutter, cutting board, scissors. Normal sewing supplies, i.e., seam ripper, pins, bobbin, measuring tape.

There is no need to pre-wash your fabric. I recommend a cotton quilting flannel or brushed cotton. Since the fabric is not pre-washed, be sure you are using a fabric that will not bleed or fade when it is washed.
