Years 8 and 9 Monday and Thursday lunchtimes from 1pm, and years 10 and 11 are Wednesday and Friday, book club meet Tuesday lunchtime.
Accelerated Reader has really taken off at Northfield following its introduction in September with Year 7 students. Accelerated reader is an independent reading programme that encourages and improves students reading. All Year 7s have taken a STAR reading test and chosen their own books from the School Library at their correct reading level. They have then been reading in morning form time, in library lessons and at home. When they have finished a book they then take a short comprehension quiz about the book. There are lots of incentives, certificates and prizes for students getting 100% on a quiz, earning book points for their tutor group and reading thousands of words!

BOOKATEERS
AR CHALLENGE
The Year 8 and 9 book groups have been reading and discussing books around the following themes,
It was Year 7 assembly on Monday 2nd December and the highlight of the event was the head to head quiz between James Deakin 7TN and Mr Walker, Headteacher.
Spies and Secrets
Spooky stories
Time Travel
Survival stories
Twisted Fairy tales
World War 1
Our favourite authors this month have been Charlie Higson who we all met at the Arc in September and Michael Morpurgo as there was a special national celebration of his books throughout November. If you would like to join one of the book groups or would like a reading list for any of the above themes just ask in the Library.
James had read “Mortal Engines” by Phil Reeve and Mr Walker, “Wintersmith” by Terry Pratchett . Both contenders entered to the “Rocky” track, Mr Walker in all his glorious splendour and James as quiet, composed and unassuming as ever. Mr Walker did take some time settling as he was somewhat challenging toward James (all in fun of course). Mrs Martin, adjudicator, oversaw the quiz while Miss Bowes went through the PowerPoint about how well all the students had done so far, how many book and words had been read and what their targets were going to be for the forthcoming year. The assembly culminated with a prize draw for those students who had achieved 100% on quizzes they had taken. Mrs White was in charge of the tombola and Mr Jackson drew the winning tickets out. Finally the quizzes finished and the winner was ……James Deakin with 100%. I would like to say Mr Walker was gracious in defeat, but sadly I can’t! (again all in fun of course), though he was last seen sulking in the corridor!!!
YEAR 8 & 9 ACCELERATED
A number of year 8 and 9 students have taken up the Accelerated Reader challenge as well and are working really hard to read and quiz on books as an extra on top of all their other school and homework. There have been lots of success and lots of 100%, well done.

BOOKS
Lots of new fiction books have been added to the Library and Resource Centre this term, we choose books for the Library by looking at the latest releases, the most popular authors, books for a variety of genres and suggestions by students. Books that have been bought based on students suggestions include P.J Murray’s Mokee Jo series, Mrs Gum series, Percy Jackson, The Kane Chronicles, Tom Gates series and the Last Dragon Chronicles. So if you have any suggestions of books you would like to see on the Library shelves speak to Mrs Cady or a Student Librarian.
