Teacher note: In this activity, students will determine addition or subtraction from key words and then add or subtract using different methods. Group size: pairs in whole-group activity Materials: method cards, page 39; key word cards, pages 40-41; number cards, pages 4243; 3 small buckets or boxes Before class: • Make one copy of the method cards and key word cards, and two copies of the number cards. • Cut out all the cards, but keep each set of number cards separate. • Place the key word cards in one bucket, the method cards in another bucket, and one set of the number cards in the third bucket. Directions: • Hand each pair a number card. • Draw 2 number cards out of the bucket. The 2 pairs who have those number cards will go to the front of the room. • One pair will then draw a key word card, and the other pair will draw a method card. • Both pairs will determine the operation (either addition or subtraction) based on the key word and will work the problem with the method chosen. • The rest of the class determines if the problem was completed correctly. Each pair with a correct answer receives a point. If a problem was done incorrectly, discuss it as a class. Ask: Why is it incorrect? Ask: What could be done to make it correct? • After the first problem is completed, students will return the key word and method cards to the correct buckets. • Start again by drawing 2 number cards and repeating this process.
