James Halliday

Halliday Wine Companion 2017, August 2016

Hand and machine-harvested from Valley Floor and higher vineyards, half cultured yeast, half wild-fermented in French puncheons (20% new), 4 months lees stirring, 10 months in barrel. As might be expected, attests to the quality of the vintage first and foremost. This is a first class illustration of the inherent strength of high quality Yarra chardonnay, fruit, acidity and oak all singing from the same page.

Wine Front, December 2016

The difference between this and the ‘Little Yering’ chardonnay is more about reserve, texture and length than it is about power, or even drinkability. This feels satiny, sings long and just feels sophisticated, but if you’re looking for accessibility and even pleasure you’re be better off with the lower priced wine. Indeed as good as this wine is, there’s a bit of ‘style over substance’ about it. Which is being harsh, even cruel perhaps. But I came away from it impressed – it’s so elegant, and so long – but largely unmoved. Which isn’t to say that it isn’t very fine quality, in the way of long slender arms.
