A week-long retreat with Iconographer Mary Jane Miller April 17-22, 2016 at Camp Arrowhead

About the retreat leader

A Journey into beauty Icons are windows on a world that calls us to be still and rest in a place of thankfulness with God. Traditional icon writing is an ancient spiritual practice; an extraordinary prayer. This retreat is for all skill levels, absolutely no experience necessary. Come away to a quiet place to be creative and renewed. It is an invitation into a 2000 year old Tradition; connecting the soul to the body, the spirit to the physical. The icon is an organic and dynamic piece of creation that moves through time to speak to us. The key is to maintain its universality so that it may reach across generations. The creation of each icon is a spiritual journey steeped in tradition and culture.

Mary Jane Miller is an experienced iconographer having worked for ten years in egg tempra and 23k gold leaf. The technique dates back to the Egyptian mummy portraiture; earth pigments suspended in hot wax used during the first century evolved into the use of dry pigments and egg yolk. A full-time artist for over 30 years, currently lives in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where she paints and teaches the lost art of Icon writing as a prayer form. Her understanding of spiritual symbology and her skill result in an experience that is deeply meditative as well as artistic. She teaches using traditional medium of egg tempera and gold leaf.

A residential retreat at Camp Arrowhed Camp Arrowhead is located west of Lewes, Delaware and operated by the Episcopal Diocese of Delaware.
