MERRY MARKET EARNS MONEY FOR COMMUNITY OUTREACH St. MM’s fall bazaar, Merry Market, was held on the traditional date, the Saturday preceding Thanksgiving. Parishioners joined in to make this effort a success, beginning with the workers from Crafty Mondays, to bake-sale providers, volunteers who came to set up tables for vendors, and those who came on the day of the sale to act as hosts, and tend the till. Of course there were break-it-all-down workers who restored the sanctuary. It was a busy day!!! Merry Market is an important fund raiser for community outreach. This year we made over $700, which will all go specifically toward helping needy families in our community. We thank Julia Poisson who chaired this event, and all who joined in to help.

Appeal from: BACK PACK PALS We need your help!! Back Pack Pals program is requesting assistance from the church community in an effort to reach children who have little or nothing to eat on the weekend. Our request for this year is packets of peanut butter crackers, individual size boxes of raisins, and ramen packets. Our agency is serving over 1000 children in Moore County school system each week. We do appreciate your help. Questions: Contact Michael Cotton, Sandhills Branch Director, 910-692-5959, ext. 2401, or [email protected].

Pick up date is December 10. COMMITMENT SUNDAY Sunday, November 5, was commitment day for our parish. We gathered following Holy Eucharist to share a meal. Kim Doolittle reminded us of the importance of personal stewardship regarding our church. Pledge cards for financial commitments were, and remain, available.

"Where are you going to hang it?" is Southern Lady code for, "Is that art?" How to be your own advocate: Instead of saying, "I'm too old for that;" say, "I don't want to do that." If you are going to try cross-country skiing, start with a small country. The problem with doing nothing is there’s no way to tell when you are finished.

Merry Market Chairperson, Julia, takes a coffee break.

Nothing is worse than that moment in the middle of an argument when you realize you are completely wrong.

You can tell how big a person is by what it takes to discourage him/her. Lori’s markets her jewelry creations.

Jane tends the till, and Valerie does some shopping.

Some things are better unsaid, which we generally realize right after we’ve said them. Do you ever wonder why we are so obsessed with trying to find intelligent life on other planets when we can’t find intelligent life here?

FYI: JANE FISHER AND PETE OLSON HAVE AGREED TO REPLACE LINDA RINALDI AND JULIA POISSON ON THE VESTRY. THESE INDIVIDUALS WILL BE VOTED ON AT THE ANNUAL PARISH MEETING, DEC. 3rd. THE NEW VESTRY YEAR BEGINS JANUARY 1. A VESTRY TERM IS THREE YEARS.

THE CHRISTMAS SEASON The date of Jesus’ birth was never recorded, but the Church developed a need to celebrate the event. The earliest mention of the observance of Christmas on the 25th of December is in the year 336. The date was probably chosen to oppose the popular pagan feast Natalis Solis Invicti by the celebration of the ‘Sun of Righteousness’ beginning in Rome and spreading throughout all Western Christendom. The popular observance of the feast has always been marked by the joy and merry-making formerly characteristic of the pagan festival it replaced. It developed considerably in England in the 19th century through the importation of German customs (e.g. decorated Christmas trees, greens in the home, etc.). These customs were prompted by the popular Prince Albert (Queen Victoria’s husband). The

holiday was also influenced greatly by the writing of Charles Dickens. The season of Christmas extends 12 days from Christmas Eve until January 5th at Evensong. The liturgical color of the season is white or gold.
