National Sandwich Day National Sandwich Day is a day to recognize the inventor of the Sandwich, John Montague, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich. Born on November 3, 1718, he was England’s first lord of the admiralty, the postmaster general and the man after whom Captain Cook named the Sandwich Islands. It is said that during a gambling marathon, he told his servants to put his meat between two pieces of bread, to save time.
