2016 SEASON OUTLOOK The Salem cross country team enters the 2016 season with expectations of competing with the best teams in the state of Michigan on a weekly basis in the KLAA Central Division. Twenty letter winners return from the 2015 team that finished 2nd in the Wayne County Championships, 3rd in the KLAA Championships, and 4th in the Regional Championships. The KLAA Central is one of the top divisions in Michigan, with both Northville (state runners-up) and Novi (3rd place) finishing in the top three in last year’s State Championships. Livonia Stevenson, South Lyon, and South Lyon East also have formidable squads. Although the Rocks are losing their top three runners (Chaz Jeffress, Jacob Kubinski, and Griffin Skaff) they will look to reload quickly, returning twenty athletes who have run under 18:40. A number of fresh faces will look to fill those top three spots, including junior Ryan Exell, junior Andrew Beyer, and sophomore Luke Haran, who each ran under 10:05 in the 3200 on the track and have personal bests under 17:23 for the 5k. Seniors Alex Kroll, Tyler Dew, and Alex Lindsay will all look to

improve upon their times from a year ago and solidify varsity positions. There are a host of juniors and sophomores looking to earn spots in the top seven as well, including junior Alec Teodori, sophomore Luke Jakubik, sophomore Shane McKimmy, junior Nolan Teodori, junior Reed Barker, junior Owen Parks, sophomore Christo Jeffers, and junior Aaron Profozich, who have each run under 18:21 and will look to crack under 18:00 early in the season. Other runners who will look to break into Salem’s Finest include senior Tyrin Johnson, senior Peter Bushaw, senior Nathan Schubring, junior Collin Swisher, and junior Nick Ontko. This year’s CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON will begin on Saturday, October 8 with the Wayne County Championships (held at Salem won the 9/10 race at the Willow Franklin Invitational in 2015 Metropark).

SALEM COACHING STAFF HEAD COACH STEVE ASPINALL Steve Aspinall begins his 11th season coaching cross county at Salem High School. After working as an assistant coach for five years, Aspinall became the head coach prior to the 2011 cross country season. Aspinall has coached eight all-conference athletes, nine all-region athletes, and three all-state athletes since 2006. Salem teams won the 2007 Division Championship and 2007 Regional Championship and twice qualified for the State Championships (2007, 2012) since Aspinall began coaching. In addition to coaching cross country, Aspinall is also the distance coach for the Salem Men’s Track & Field team that has won three Regional Championships (2009, 2012, 2016), three Division Championships (2009, 2010, 2015), and one Conference Championship (2016) since 2006. ASSISTANT COACH GEOFF BAKER Geoff Baker begins his 31st season of coaching cross country at Salem High School. Baker has had an outstanding career as a coach with the Rocks. He has coached numerous WLAA Conference Championship teams and individuals, most recently in 2003 as a team and in 2014 (Chaz Jeffress). Baker has qualified teams for the state meet twelve times since 1986, including most recently in 2012. The highest team finish for Salem was in 1989 where the Rocks finished sixth place, and finished eighth place as a team in both 1995 and 1997. Baker has coached 31 all-conference athletes, 42 all-region athletes, and 15 all-state athletes since 1986. Under his guidance, Salem teams won seven Division Championships (1987, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1998, 2002, 2007), three Conference Championships (1997, 1998, 2003), and three Regional Championships (1990, 1997, 2007) Baker graduated from Plymouth Salem in 1982 with a 1600 personal best of 4:37.1. Baker has also been coaching track and field at Salem since 1984 (as the Head Coach from 1992-2005), when he first began as a volunteer assistant under then-coach Gary Balconi. ASSISTANT COACH DALE MASKILL Dale Maskill begins his first year helping coach the Salem Cross Country team after spending time coaching at South Lyon High School and Plymouth High School. Maskill is also the Head Coach of the Salem Men’s Track & Field team and has coaching experience as the Salem Girl’s Track & Field Head Coach as well.

On the track, Stryker ran 4:31.5 in the 1600. Thomas, John (1991) – Thomas was the top finisher at the 1989 State Championships where the Rocks finished sixth place. In Thomas’ cross country career, Salem finished with a division record of 14-1 and won Division Championships in 1989 and 1990. Thomas ranked the #3 sophomore, #2 junior, #5 senior, and #6 in school history at graduation with his personal best 16:29. He also ran 1:59.1 in the 800 run on the track. Vergari, Doug (1988) – The 1987 season for Doug Vergari was one of the most accomplished seasons for a Salem harrier ever. Vergari led the Rocks to a Division Championship with a 5-0 dual meet record. He also ran a 16:14 at Richardson Park against Walled Lake Central to break the previous school record of 16:19 set by Scott Stryker one year prior. Vergari capped his cross country career with a 13th place finish at the State

Championships to become the first all-state runner in school history. Vergari held the #2 junior time (17:17) and #1 senior time with his 16:14 personal best. After winning the school’s first ever Lakes Division Championship in 1987, the Rocks would go on to win the 1989, 1990, and 1991 Division Championships as well, continuing the success first established by Vergari and the 1987 team. Walsh, Jimmy (2006) – Walsh was one of the most productive four-year runners ever to compete for Salem. Walsh earned allregion honors three times, and was a key varsity contributor in each of his four seasons. In fact, he is one of very few runners to have been on teams that have reached the State Championships in each of his four years. At graduation, Walsh held the #4 freshman, #3 sophomore, #11 junior, and #16 senior times in Salem history, and was #20 all-time with a personal best of 16:33. Warner, Adam (2004) – After a successful first three seasons of cross country, Warner improved dramatically during his senior year, capping it with a personal best 16:26 at the State Championships. As a senior, Warner placed fourth at the WLAA Championships and fourth at the Regional Championships. At the time of his graduation, Warner ranked as the #9 freshman, #14 sophomore, #18 junior, and #13 senior times, in addition to the #16 all-time in Salem history.

The 1989 team finished 6th in Michigan, the school’s highest finish since 1956 (6th), led by captain Brendon Masterson

Warner, Donnie (2001) – Warner was a large reason why the Salem program is successful today – he bridged the gap from the great mid-nineties teams to the current. Warner earned allconference honors twice and all-state honors in 2000 with his 15:47 performance at the State Championships. His WLAA individual championship led the Rocks to a fourth place finish in 2000. At graduation, Warner held the #4 freshman, #1 sophomore, #7 junior, and #2 senior times in school history. He also ran 4:26.7 in the 1600 run and 9:47.6 in the 3200 run. After completing a successful running career at Salem, Warner went on to compete collegiately at DePaul University where he ran 30:40.44 for the 10k and earned allconference honors in both cross country and track. In 2004, Warner was elected captain by his teammates at DePaul, and competed as their #1 runner for most of the year. Warner’s marathon personal best is 2:26:52 in the 2013 Indianapolis Marathon.

White, Walter (1977) – White ran 16:22 as a sophomore and 15:58 as a junior (both for three miles) as one of the top runners in the area. White combined with Scott Kleam to form one of the best 1-2 punches in the state of Michigan. On the track, White was one of the best runners in school history, running 1:59.0 in the 800, 4:18.7 in the 1600, and 9:35.7 in the 3200, the latter two which Walt White (left) and Scott Kleam run at Cass Benton in 1975 stood as school records for many years. His 9:35.7 would not be broken until Nick Allen ran 9:32.2 in 1998 and his 4:18.7 would stand until Chaz Jeffress ran 4:14.33 in 2016.

*To qualify, a Salem athlete must have earned allconference or all-region honors twice OR earn all-state honors, OR break 16:25 in the 5,000 meter run.
