Reading In Reading, the children will be working on a unit called ¨Character Studies¨. This is work in which the students carefully study the characters they are reading about. They look for what the character does and says they determine what traits the character possesses. They notice patterns in their characters behavior and use this information to make predicitons. Students will also be engaged in character study book clubs. Book club assigments must be completed in order for the children to particpate in their groups.
MATH Our next unit of study in math is called ¨Use Multiplication Facts¨. Students will begin to learn to identify patterns in a table and use an array or a multiplication table to find an unknown factor or product. In addition, they will also learn how to use different strategies to multiply with multiples of 10 such as draw a diagram, use base-ten blocks, a number line, or place-value. Lastly, in this unit they will learn how to model and record multiplying 1-digit whole numbers by multiples of 10. Also, remember to keep practicing multiplication tables. Weekly timed quizzes will begin in January.
Writing In Writing, we will begin a unit on Opinion Writing. Students will select a topic that they feel passionate about and have knowledge in and provide evidence to support their claims. This unit will lead into the sophisticated art of essay. This is where writers include an introduction, state a claim and support their ideas with numerous pieces of evidence. The children will cycle through the writing process by generating an idea, planning, drafting, revising, and editing their writing.
Social Studies In Social Studies we will be discussing why geography matters and how different communities need to modify and adapt to their environment to meet their needs. Your child may need to continue doing some research at home, so please 2 be prepared.
