Leak testing of the oil and coolant cavities of engines is critical but is traditionally a lengthy process, often causing serious bottleneck issues for engine manufacturers. Challenge
A manufacturer of large diesel engines faced a challenge meeting increasing throughput requirements. The manufacturer experienced a large bottleneck at their leak test stations due to lengthy cycle times. In order to accommodate their increasing volume, the manufacturer needed to either invest in additional test stations or improve the throughput of their existing leak test method. The proposed solution could not sacrifice quality verification for improved cycle time.
Solution
The manufacturer decided to implement Sciemetric’s advanced 3310 Leak Test System. The system is designed to simultaneously test the coolant and oil cavities. The system leverages Sciemetric’s advanced signature analysis technology to detect and diagnose defects quicker than other leak test systems and find defects that other leak test systems can not find. To minimize the cycle time impact leak testing can have for engine assembly lines, some test systems rely on predictive analysis to evaluate the quality of each cavity. Although predictive analysis decreases test time, it may sacrifice reliability and repeatability. The Sciemetric test system relies on advances in fill and pressure control technology to decrease test cycle time by using closed loop pressure control to fill and maintain pressure in the cavity. The system then applies advanced algorithms that have been designed specifically for leak testing to assess cavity integrity. As a result, the engine manufacture achieves reliable and repeatable results in a fraction of the time the previous testing required.
