2009 WOMEN’S LACROSSE 2008 REVIEW NOTEBOOK SEASON RECAP

• The 2008 edition of the UMass women’s lacrosse team got off to a rought start, but a spot in the Atlantic 10 Championship game capped a strong finish to the season. In head coach Alexis Venechanos’ second campaign, the Minutewomen finished the year with a 7-11 overall record and a 4-3 mark in A-10 play which placed UMass fourth in the league standings. The fourthplace finish in the regular-season gave UMass the fourth-seed in the A-10 Tournament, hosted in McGuirk Stadium, and the Minutewomen defeated No. 1-seed Richmond in the semifinals with a gutsy, overtime effort. Temple proved too much, however, in the championship game winning 10-3 and handing UMass just its second loss in the final six games of the season. • The season got off on the right foot with a 9-5 win over Holy Cross, but dropped six straight games after that win. Five of those losses were to teams ranked in the top-20 including #3 Maryland and #1 Northwestern. • After a 1-2 start in A-10 play, UMass won three straight games with wins at Saint Joseph’s, at La Salle and against St. Bonaventure to claim the fourth seed in the league tourney. • Kathleen Typadis, one of the top scorers in UMass history, scored the game-tying goal with one second left in regulation and then hit the game-winning goal in overtime as the Minutewomen knocked off three-time defending league champ Richmond in the A-10 Semifinals. It marked the first time since 2003 that UMass had earned a spot in the A-10 Title Game.

POSTSEASON HONORS

• Four Minutewomen were named to the A-10 All-Conference Second Team in 2008: Kaytlin McCormick, Jeannette Villapiano, Julie Papaleo, and Jackie Rosenzweig. • Jackie Lyons and Kelsey Schreiner, who turned into two of the team’s top performers, were named to the A-10 All-Rookie Team. • Starting midfielder Merritt Cosgrove earned a spot on the Academic All-Conference Team as well.

STAT LEADERS

Kathleen Typadis finished her career second in goals (160).

34

• Offensively, UMass was led by Kaytlin McCormick’s 45 points on 35 goals and 10 assists. Seniors Melynda Zwick and Kathleen Typadis rounded out the top three. Zwick had 35 points thanks to a team-high 18 assists. Typadis ranked second on the team with 29 goals and added three assists. • Defensively, Jackie Rosenzweig led the team with 34 groundballs and 24 caused turnovers. Senior Julie Papaleo finished her career on a strong note with 23 caused turnovers and 28 groundballs. Goaltending was an issue for UMass with senior Krissy Anderson returning after a year off and rookie Colleen Speth spliting time in cage. Both keepers started nine games allowing a combined 11.21 goals per game with a .398 save percentage. Anderson caught fire, however, in the final six games of the year and made several huge saves in overtime against Richmond in the A-10 Semifinal win.

A-10 TOURNEY HISTORY

• UMass has qualified eight times for the fourteam Atlantic 10 Tournament. • The Minutewomen narrowly missed out in 2007 - Alexis Venechanos’ first-year as head coach. • All-time, UMass is 4-7 in A-10 postseason play with three appearances in the Championship Game (2000, 2003, 2008).
