September Newsletter Principal’s Message…

Indian Hills Elementary

The 2017-2018 school year is already well underway, and it’s hard to believe that we are into our 5th week of school. A continued priority for this school year is to increase family and community involvement at IHE. When schools and families partner to work together to meet academic goals, good things happen. We have many opportunities for families to play an important role in our school. Some of the ways that you can get involved at Indian Hills include:

721-2900 Principal: Ryan Dashner School Starts: 7:45 a.m.

- volunteering in the classroom - helping with recess/lunch - joining PTO - volunteering with school grounds maintenance - chaperoning and/or planning school field trips

Tardy Bell: 7:55 a.m.

Please make every effort to attend Parent/Teacher conferences on Monday, Sept. 18th and visit with your child’s classroom teacher or me about ways in which you can help. If you have any other ideas about ways you would like to be involved, please share them with us. We look forward to making you a vital part of our school community.

Dismissal: 2:15 p.m. (Mondays) 3:15 p.m. (Tue.—Fri.)

FRIDAY CHECK-OUTS The staff at IHE is committed to providing our students with a high quality education. That can only happen when students are here at school. We are doing our best to reduce the numbers of students that are being checked out on Friday afternoons. Instruction continues to the end of each school day, including Fridays. When students are not here, they fall behind in their studies. We ask that you schedule appointments and make travel plans that coincide with the end of each school day. Friday checkouts are subject to approval by the principal. Your cooperation and understanding are greatly appreciated.

COUNSELOR’S CORNER: Welcome to a new school year! For those who are unfamiliar with me, my name is Larry Macias Jr. and this is my first year at Indian Hills Elementary. My goal is to provide assistance to your child in setting the tone for developing the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary for them to become healthy, competent and confident learners. I am looking to provide a comprehensive school counseling program as part of a team that includes school staff, parents and the community in order to create a caring climate and atmosphere here at IHE. I will be working with the students to provide: - Academic support - Bullying prevention and awareness - Career awareness, exploration and planning - Character education - Communication, problem-solving and conflict resolution - Education on understanding self and others including peer relationships, coping strategies and effective social skills Feel free to contact me at any time during the school year if you would like to discuss your child’s needs and concerns. I look forward to a productive school year!

NAVAJO LANGUAGE AND CULTURE I am grateful to be teaching your child the Navajo Language. On Sept. 18, I encourage parents who have their child signed up for Navajo Language to stop by Room 7 during parent/teacher conferences. Our Navajo Language goal is to revitalize the Language through active learning and participation. Students may progress at a slower or faster rate based on a variety of factors, including their age or affective issues. Instruction for your child for the first quarter will include the Pledge of Allegiance, handling verbs, commands, songs, numbers, clans, family, and body parts. We will be taking our time to learn each concept. Please ask your child what he/she has learned in Navajo Language. I have asked students to share with family and friends what they have learned. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call me at (505)721-2900. Mrs. Tom, Navajo Language Teacher ,

Our Preschool and PreK classes are studying about families. Since Sept. 10th is Grandparent’s Day, we are inviting the grandparents of Preschool and PreK students to share a special time with us at school. All grandparents are invited to come to our classrooms on Friday, Sept.8 from 9:00 – 10:00 to play, read and have snacks together. We want to honor our students’ grandparents and thank them for the heritage of learning they are giving to their children and grandchildren.
